There's a Dirty Dancing remake in the works
Plans for a “Dirty Dancing” remake have been knocking around for years now, but finally ABC has set its hungry eyes on the green light for a three-hour musical special which will definitely *not* put Baby in a corner.
The oh-so-’80s classic, which featured the late Patrick Swayze as the resident hottie resort dance guru Johnny Castle and Jennifer Grey as Baby Houseman, will feature Abigail Breslin as the “innocent young woman in the early 1960’s who vacations with her affluent parents and siblings in the Catskill Mountains and falls for the resort’s working-class dance instructor,” per Entertainment Weekly.
The news comes on the clicky heels of NBC’s “The Wiz Live!” success, which drew a cool 11.5 million viewers during its debut last week.
“Dirty Dancing” has been ripe for revisit for a while now — having first been put through the sequel ringer back in 2004 when “Dirty Dancing: Havana Nights” happened and then snatched up for potential remake back in ’09.
The project, which was originally slated as a Lionsgate film to be released in 2013, was put on hold for “casting reasons,” and would-be director Kenny Ortega told MTV News that it was a “big challenge” to find the right cast to replace the “one of a kind” actors who portrayed the characters first.
A TV musical backdrop, however, might be more amenable to audiences, given the prevalence of music and, well, dirty dancing in the story. We just have to wonder if the stage’ll be big enough to pull off this must-have maneuver (but this reportedly won’t be live, so they’ll theoretically get more than one shot to get it right).
Still, there are some people who are going to need a little more convincing that this belongs in the “good idea” category.

I do not approve of the Dirty Dancing remake. Neither does Patrick Swayze.
