How to tour with Alison Wonderland
MTV Travel sat down with the Aussie babe, producer and DJ at MTV HQ to nut out her Coachella itinerary. Anyone heading beyond the Joshua Trees take note: Alison Wonderland definitely knows how to tour like a rock star.
Q: Who will accompany you to Coachella?
A: My mum, dad, sister, few friends, my tour manager, my merch guy, my lights and video guy. We’ve got a house hired and we’ve always travelled together to every festival. I’ve had the same crew from the very beginning, it’s nice to have them around. Adidas have made us all matching Adidas tracksuits for the tour. Black ones with white stripes and on the back instead of the Adidas symbol it says 'Wonderland'. Oh and my chicken. I have this toy chicken that I’ve had with me since I was born and I take it with me everywhere I go. It’s called ‘Chickaloballa’ [laughs].
Q: Any pit stops or detours?
A: In the middle of the two Coachellas I go to Seattle to do a show and then afterwards I start my tour around America.
Q: What are your tips for roadtripping?
A: Bring a portable phone charger and make a really good mixtape. At the moment, mine’s all about the new Kendrick record.
Q: Who are you looking forward to seeing?
Definitely Jamie XX, he’s a favourite of mine and the Aussies like Chet Faker and What So Not. I’m really excited to go support them.
Q: Who would be your ultimate surprise guest?
Hologram for sure! AC/DC with the hologram of Bon Scott, the original lead singer. That would be sick! I’ve seen them before, I love AC/DC. They have so many hits, it’s crazy. Sorry, I’m really passionate about them [laughs].
Q: How will your set differ at Coachella? Any surprises?
A: I think the setup is just going to be a bit bigger and I’m going to be playing more of my original songs. I wish I could reveal my stage, but I can’t, it’s so exciting. Sometimes I drop Spice Girls [laughs].
Q: What’s a crazy night from on tour that you can share with us?
A: Peking Duk and I had a really funny moment in LA together where we were at this club tipping imaginary fedoras to everyone saying “M’ Lady” [Internet sensation]. Nobody knew what we were doing [laughs] but those guys are so crazy.
Q: What is your next festival goal?
A: I would love to play Glastonbury one day. That would be amazing. That’s probably the dream.
