Anne Hathaway Just Spilt The Tea On An Iconic ‘Princess Diaries’ Moment That Was Never Meant To Be In The Movie
Here’s some royal goss of a different kind. The real kind. The Mia Thermopolis kind.
So it’s been almost 20 years since the first The Princess Diaries came out (OK wow, now we feel old) and Anne Hathaway just dished some dirt from the first film.
We all remember that iconic scene of Mia Thermopolis slipping on the bleachers while talking to Lily. Lily is listing all the reasons why Mia shouldn’t be a princess and then Mia just goes BANG! Fallin’ flat on her bum and laughing hysterically. It looked so real. And guess what? It was.
"One of the things that I love about Garry is that he was never afraid of the spontaneous moment," she began. "If it was good, it was in the movie. He didn't care where it came from, he didn't care what happened.”
“And there was this moment when we were filming...We were filming in San Francisco. Predictably, it had rained. We were outside, and we had to get the shot really fast because we were losing light. And we had to go on these bleachers and they did their best to wipe them down. And Gary had just said, 'Okay, there’s a lot of exposition in this scene, but he would’ve said, 'There’s a lot of pipe in this scene so we just have to say it really fast.'"
Hathaway went on to detail the famous scene, saying she “slipped on a puddle, and just fell. Absolutely fell and burst out laughing and kept going with the scene,” and that she “never thought about it again” until the trailer came out and she saw her goof in the final cut. “And all of a sudden, like six months later it’s in the trailer. He kept it! He kept it because it was a charming moment."
It was. Like actually one of the best. So thank you San Fran for being wet that day, thank you Anne Hathaway for being a clutz, and thank you Garry Marshall for keeping it in there.
