EXCLUSIVE: Azealia Banks talks breaking conventions on new record
Self-confessed “Miss Cool,” Azealia Banks, is no stranger to going against the grain with her music, and has revealed that she’s worked hard to break conventions with her upcoming release ‘Broke With Expensive Taste,’ touting it as a “real piece of art.”
Speaking to MTV Australia at the Sydney leg of ‘Listen Out’ festival over the weekend, the outspoken star explained that the reason why fans have been waiting so long for another album from her is that she didn’t want the whole thing to be lost in the abyss of the internet.
“I feel like in order for me to stand out amongst you know, everyone who’s making music now, you’ve got to make a real piece of art,” explained the rapper.
“You know, everyone’s putting their songs on the internet and everyone’s putting stuff out. And for me, I just kind of felt like, if I were to put an album out right after ‘212,’ it would have been swallowed up by cyberspace, you know what I mean?
“The internet sucks because it’s like you have these dreams of being this artist, and being influential and all this sort of stuff, and you work on these projects for years and years and years. I’ve been working on this album for five years and you put it on the internet, and then all of a sudden the internet’s eaten it up and devoured it and then it’s old in a month. There goes all of your work and effort.”
But the ‘1991’ star is clearly proud of the album and has devoted a lot of time to making sure this is a record that won’t be forgotten.
“So, for me it was it was just like, ok, I need to make this something I’m going to listen to for five years in a row … for as long as I worked on it. So, yeah I’ve definitely impressed myself, and I’ve challenged myself, and I’ve outdone myself on this album and I’m really excited.
“My new album is very, very unconventional – and I made an effort in making it unconventional, but not so much that it seems like I’m trying to be cool. It’s very authentic, and that’s part of the reason it took so long to come together because my thing, you know, my whole thing is that I’m Miss Cool, I’m Miss Authenticity.”
In an interview with the AU Review, Banks also revealed that she had worked with Disclosure on the record, but dropped the tune because had recorded “much better stuff.”
“I did something with Disclosure but they were really rude in an interview, so I canned it. I might leak it though, and to be honest, I've got better stuff on my record,” she dished.
‘Broke With Expensive Taste’ is due for release in January 2014.
