Baauer Talks Life After Mega Hit 'Harlem Shake': "The Only Con Is If That Hit Defines You Forever"
Baauer is no stranger to fame and success, his song “Harlem shake” flung him into internet sensation proportions like the world had never seen.
Since then he has had a number of huge collaborations and epic late night hits, and he’s returning to the country for a bunch of shows thanks to BBE.
We caught up with him to talk all things making bangers and being in Australia and eating red rooster.
How do you stay inspired and focused?
I clear my mind and don’t go for any particular sound or anything. I find the best stuff happens when I think the least about what I'm doing and just let the ideas flow.
There is an ever-changing flow of what’s hot and what’s not; do you find yourself following music trends?
I'm always inspired by all the tight stuff that's coming out, [but] I try to always put my own spin on it.
Viral success can be short lived, what are the pros and cons of making a huge hit song?
After a while I've learned that it's really all pros. The exposure gained is truly priceless. The only con is if that hit defines you forever... the way to prevent that is never ever stop working.
What song are you most proud of?
One of my first tunes I put online was a remix of a band called First Aid Kit. It's really old, but still the one I'm most proud of.
Who’s been your favorite artist to collab with?
It was so cool to collaborate with Just Blaze, he's always been a musical hero of mine.
Are you excited to return to Australia?
I'm beyond excited! Australian people are experts in turning up.
Where is your favorite place to eat in Australia?
While I've had some of the most amazing Asian food in my life here, my favorite place would still be Red Rooster.
Which is your favorite city?
That's too hard! I will say I always get my haircut in Perth.
What’s your favorite Australian expression?
'Bogan' or 'shoey'.
What can we expect next from Baauer?
More music. I’ve been locked in the studio for a while and now I'm ready to let it out!
