You Need To Hear Beyoncé’s Original Demo For Ariana Grande’s ‘R.E.M.’ ASAP
But did you know that Grande’s dreamy smash ‘R.E.M.’ first belonged to another leading lady?
Beyoncé's own rendition of ‘R.E.M’, titled ‘Wake Up’, hit the web late last year, making a slight rumble on the cybersphere. However, it’s still been flying very much under the radar.... and I will not have that any longer.
Bey apparently created ‘Wake Up’ with Pharrell with the intention of including the demo on her 2013 self-titled album. It obviously fell by the wayside - which is such a wild concept, as it is literally perfect - before Ariana reworked the demo while producing with Pharrell during her Sweetener era.
Ariana addresses the reports that “R.E.M.” was initially “Wake Up” an unreleased track by Beyoncé: “it’s an entirely new song now but the hook was so dreamy it had to find a home” ☁️ pic.twitter.com/63UGmhdZ73
Both respective fan bases have been rather aggressive in the comments, bickering over which artist’s version is better. While many were quick to point out the beauty of Bey’s soulful, more-mature sound, others commended Ariana for her light, dreamy feel.
i won't lie for the timeline beyoncé's version of R.E.M. ((Wake Up)) is far better than ariana's pic.twitter.com/uV391yzmFO

No shade but R.E.M can't measure up to Wake Up so..........

But, in 2019, we refuse to let stan culture pit two equally incredible female artists against each other, okay? Both versions are so unique - Ariana and Bey give life to the song in different ways - so it’s almost impossible to compare them anyway. Let’s just sit back and enjoy the music, shall we?
Check out Beyoncé’s original demo, ‘Wake Up’, below, and prepare to float on a cloud of soul and sensuality.
