Review: Crystal Castles Big Day Out side show in Sydney
If you were lucky enough to score a ticket to the sold out Crystal Castles gig at The Hi-Fi in Sydney on Thursday night, it was a school night worth going out on!
The Toronto duo, comprised of Alice Glass and Ethan Kath, exploded onto the stage in a haze of smoke and flashing red lights, opening with ‘Plague,’ the first single from their recently released third album ‘III.’ The tightly-packed crowd instantly went into mosh pit mode, which sucked you in whether you like it or not!
Known for their wild live shows, Crystal Castles lived up to that reputation yet again, with Alice going wild and dancing on top of the drum kit, swinging the mic stand around like a baton. The extreme light show matched the supercharged intensity of the band, which never seemed to fade from track to track despite not a word being spoken by either member the entire gig.
After performing tracks from their previous album ‘II’ including their biggest hit to date ‘Not In Love,’ as well as plenty of new material, the duo left the stage, leaving the crowd crying out for more.
Thankfully we didn’t have long to wait, as Alice and Ethan returned for an encore of three tracks including the chilling yet enthralling ‘Baptism,’ which took the already-pumping crowd up a notch. Reaching the final climax of the show, Alice, in true Rock ‘n’ Roll style, pulled out a bottle of bourbon and started swigging. If you were lucky enough you were showered by it, as she spat it all over those in close range.
The sweaty, steamy and sticky crowd dispersed into the night after a gig that can only be described as “hectic,” and one which will resonate throughout the year. If you haven’t experienced this addictively chaotic duo for yourself then get on it - you won’t be disappointed!
