REVIEW: Snoop Dogg live at Big Day Out Auckland
“When I say sticky, you say icky. Sticky!” “Icky!” “Sticky!” “Icky!” Snoop Dogg, Snoop Lion, Snoopzilla, The Doggfather, whatever you want to call him, Snoop D O Double G is the man - the man who probably had the crowd as hoarse as he should’ve been at the end of his Big Day Out set in Auckland on Friday, thanks to his endless crowd call-backs and back catalogue of hits.
Whether you’re a Snoop fan from way back or you’ve just jumped on board with his new reggae album, there isn’t even a inkling of doubt that you wouldn’t have been completely blown away by his lengthy set on the Aroha stage.
The band let anticipation grow by teasing with riffs of ‘California Love’ and ‘Still Dre’ before the man himself even made it onto the stage, and while he may have kicked things off with a track from his ‘Reincarnated’ record, the rest of the show was nothing but a Snoop Dogg hit parade.
Snoop, dressed in a sweatshirt with a huge tiger’s face on the front, blue jeans, sunglasses and a diamond earring, was supported throughout the show by his group Tha Dogg Pound, which ensured the crowd was getting one of the most authentic Snoop experiences out there. Oh and there were also several appearances by Nasty Dogg - whose huge cartoon dog head added yet more animation to an already colourful live show.
In fact, it was hard to even pick which of the tracks drew the biggest roars from the crowd - because the fans were simply frothing the whole way through.
The set list featured a back catalogue of favourites including ‘P.I.M.P.,’ ‘I Wanna F**k You,’ ‘Drop It Like It’s Hot,’ ‘Signs’ and ‘Young, Wild and Free’ as well as Snoop’s earlier hits ‘Gin & Juice,’ ‘Ain’t Nuthin’ But a G Thang’ ‘The Next Episode’ and ‘Ain’t No Fun.’ Simply put, it was just incredible to be right in the thick of such an electrifying and infectious atmosphere.
Anyone in two minds about checking out Snoop Dogg during the Australian leg of the Big Day Out, just trust us - his performance is one for the BDO record books and you don't want to be the one that misses out.
