Interview – Brian McFadden
With his fourth studio record about to drop, an upcoming wedding to Vogue Williams, and the sixth season of ‘Australia’s Got Talent’ about to kick-off - 2012 looks set to be Brian McFadden’s biggest year yet!
And fans will be stoked to hear that our favourite honorary Aussie, who released his latest single ‘Wrap My Arms’ last month, will be delving back to his
“pop rock” roots for his brand spankin’ new album!
MTV caught up with the former Westlife star to talk new music, taming his wild ways and his secret addiction to ‘Geordie Shore!’
MTV: Hi Brian, firstly, congratulations on your recent engagement! How’s the wedding planning going?
Brian: Ah thank you very much. It’s all good, we’re working away, getting it all sorted.
MTV: So, we’re dying to hear your new album – give us a sneaky insight…
Brian: It’s going to be going back to my roots again, back to what my first solo record ‘Irish Son’ was like, which is a bit more pop rock, a bit more singer/songwritery than my last two albums. For my last two albums I went a bit more electro/electro pop, so I’m definitely going back to being more organic and writing songs from the acoustic guitar.
MTV: Any ideas when it’ll be released?
Brian: I think maybe June, possibly June. I’m still kind of finishing it. The record company ring me everyday being like, ‘When can we put out the album?’ and I keep going ‘Yeah, in a few more weeks, a few more weeks. I just keep pushing back coz I’ll finish the album and then I’ll start a new song and I’ll be like, ‘Oh no I want to put this on the album,’ so it keeps getting pushed back.
MTV: Does it feature any collaborations?
Brian: Not yet, there is a song that might be a collaboration, but we haven’t finalised it yet.
MTV: Who would you love to duet with?
Brian: I’d like to do something with someone country…maybe Lady Antebellum or Keith Urban or someone like that. Something different. I’ve done plenty of collaborations, but nothing in the country world.
MTV: Are you planning an Aussie tour with the album?
Brian: I’m definitely going to do some touring in Australia, and possible go back to Europe to put out the album near the end of the year.
MTV: Talking of touring, are you excited about Madonna coming Down Under next year?
Brian: I’m not a mental Madonna fan to be honest with you, so I don’t think I’ll be going to that gig.
MTV: The One Direction boys are also heading to Oz – are you a fan?
Brian: They kind of remind me of Westlife when we started out. I met them a year ago in LA. They’re just fun. They’re five young wild guys, just enjoying it. I think that’s good to see when someone has success that they’re actually enjoying it and not taking it too seriously.
MTV: So, we know you’ve just started the auditions for the new season of ‘Australia’s Got Talent’ – any stand out acts yet?
Brian: This year the biggest thing has been rock bands, there are a lot of rock bands. Tasmania’s delivered about 4, So it’s definitely going to be a battle of the bands this year.
MTV: Your ex Delta Goodrem is starring as a judge on the rival talent show ‘The Voice’ – do you think she’ll do a good job?
Brian: I have no idea…it’s two different kinds of shows.
MTV: She’s planning to drop her new album soon too – perhaps there’ll be some friendly chart rivalry?
Brian: I guess so yeah (laughs).
MTV: We saw you were tweeting James from Geordie Shore when he was here recently – do you watch the show?
Brian: Yeah I love it. I love it. Vogue and I are addicted to it. They’re mad.
MTV: Are you a fan of ‘Jersey Shore’ too?
Brian: Yeah we watch both of them. They’re good value. You watch them and you just kind of go, ‘I’m just glad my life’s not like that!’ When you have a hangover you watch and you think it could be worse, I could be one of them!
MTV: Talking of hangovers, we hear you’ve toned down the partying recently?
Brian: I haven’t given up drinking, just drinking a little less and going to the gym. I think when you get into your thirties you have to start. I’m not 18 anymore so you can't just be partying every day, you’ve got to have some kind of balance, so I try and go to the gym now once a year, that keeps me going!
