After 11 Years As Her Conservator Britney Spears' Father Has Stepped Down
For the past 11 years, Britney Spears' dad, Jamie, has pretty much managed her entire life as her court-appointed conservator.
This legal conservatorship has essentially given Jamie the power to take charge of almost every aspect of Britney’s day-to-day – from restricting or limiting her contact with visitors to organising caretakers and security for her 24 hours a day, consulting with medical professionals on Brit’s behalf and, of course, managing her finances.
There’s been some serious mixed feelings about whether all these restrictions on Britney’s decisions have actually been in her best interest (see: the whole #FreeBritney movement). There’s no doubt that debate around the subject will ignite again this week because on Monday Jamie stepped down from the legal role for the time being, claiming “personal health reasons” as the reason for the break.
It’s now been confirmed that Britney’s long-time care manager, Jodi Montgomery, will be Jamie’s replacement until January 31, 2020, when Jamie is set to return to the position. But Jodi’s appointment could last even longer, given the messy legal situation between Jamie and Britney’s sons.
In case you missed it, Jamie’s step back comes after Britney’s ex, Kevin Federline, filed a restraining order and an abuse claim with police following allegations of a physical altercation between Jamie and Britney and Kevin‘s 13-year-old son, Sean Preston. A report evaluating Britney’s care and medications is also due to be filed in court soon and if it’s critical of Jamie’s role at all, it could pave the way for a new appointee altogether.
We’ll bring you more as this story develops.
