Watch Coldplay's 'Pure Imagination' Tribute To Gene Wilder
Following beloved comedic actor Gene Wilder’s death yesterday (August 29), Coldplay have added their voices to the flood of fan and celebritytributes pouring in from around the world.
At the band’s show in Denver last night, they honored the late, great actor by covering “Pure Imagination,” the song Wilder made famous as Willy Wonka in the 1971 classic Willy Wonka & The Chocolate Factory. In a clip posted to Coldplay’s Twitter account, neon confetti rains down upon the crowd as frontman Chris Martin sings the twinkling tune’s chorus: “Come with me and we’ll be in a world of pure imagination.”
“Pure Imagination” already seems like the type of song Coldplay would perform under any circumstances — it fits right in with the band’s whimsical aesthetic, after all — which makes their cover not only a beautiful tribute, but also an entirely harmonious one.
See the band’s video below, followed by Wilder’s original version fromWilly Wonka.
