Conan Gray & LAUV Keep It Real With New Single, ‘Fake’
The pair have exploded in 2020, and with their latest duet, they've never sounded more authentic.
Both Conan Gray and LAUV have proven themselves to be forces in music in 2020. Gray dropped his debut album Kid Krow back in March, a stunning and cathartic coming-of-age album that recounted tragic stories of poverty and discrimination but laced it with just enough charm to keep you listening more and more. LAUV also dropped his debut album in March – how i’m feeling – which catapulted him into another echelon of superstardom as he captured the deepest inner-workings of his own psyche and translated them into pop music. But now, the two have joined forces in a new duet, “Fake”, but neither has ever sounded more authentic.
“Fake” is an expression of anger, frustration, resentment, sadness and hurt all in one. Lyrically, it’s pretty abrasive. In under two and a half minutes, both Conan Gray and LAUV are essentially calling out those people everyone knows – the ones who don’t do what they say they’ll do, the ones whose faces shift depending on who they’re around. The chorus is an arena-ready confrontational scream – “You’re so fucking fake!” – that must have felt as good to write as it does to yell along to.
Musically, the melody is fine. It’s a pretty standard guitar-led affair, but it’s also congruent to the point of the song. The music doesn’t pretend to be anything it’s not, while letting Gray and LAUV’s quite direct words deliver all the meaning. There’s little to no metaphor in the lyrics of the song, which helps push the message of anger and frustration home. Conan and LAUV are telling you exactly how it is, because you seem to be telling them everything but.
The track is notably the first official vocal collaboration Conan Gray has ever released, marking a new milestone in his career. LAUV had many collaborations on how i’m feeling, meaning he was a seasoned pro at something Gray had avoided up until now. The most refreshing part of “Fake” is that we’re hearing two male singer-songwriters that aren’t afraid to duet and share the spotlight. In pop especially, it feels like egos prevent some of our greatest male pop acts from collaboration with other male pop acts, instead opting for another boring heterosexual duet or another misplaced rap verse that is done purely for streams.
But “Fake” sees both Conan Gray and LAUV push against that, in a collaboration that feels as special as it does real.
