VIC Premier Warns That An Entire Statewide Lockdown Is A Real Possibility
VIC Premier Dan Andrews says a statewide lockdown could be on the cards should the current outbreaks of COVID-19 in the state, including 73 new cases confirmed overnight, not to be contained, reports the ABC.
Yesterday (Tuesday), Mr Andrews had announced that as of midnight tonight (Wednesday), the 10 Melbourne hotspot suburbs would be placed on full lockdown until July 29.
Today, however, he said that if the spike didn’t get under control, “we will end up with … a whole state shutdown.”
"This is not over," Mr Andrews continued. "This is so wildly infectious that even minor breaches of the rules can lead to this random movement of the virus around the community."
He added that a "booze bus-type arrangement on main thoroughfares in and out of the areas" would be set up to enforce the restrictions.
"I hope we don't have to issue any fines but unless you enforce these rules they won't be followed," he said.

The postcodes going into lockdown are 3012, 3021, 3032, 3038, 3042, 3046, 3047, 3055, 3060, 3064 – home to 311,000 residents. Anyone living in those postcodes will only be allowed to leave their houses for four reasons: for work or school, for care or care giving, for daily exercise, for food and other essentials.
For the rest of the state, the reinstated restrictions are:
- Home gatherings are again limited to just five people (down from 10)
- Outdoor gatherings are limited to 10 (down from 20)
- Pubs, restaurants and cafés are to stay limited to 20 people (the limit was due to be upped to 50 yesterday)
- Private worship or religious ceremonies are limited to 20 people
- Real estate auctions, auction houses, open houses and community facilities are limited to 20 people
The suburbs will only be reopened when health authorities start to see daily cases driven down, Dan Andrews said.
"The message is really clear, if you want to see these lockdowns eased ... follow the rules, use common sense, don't pretend it's over," he said.

The state’s currently on a testing blitz, with over 113,000 people tested in the last week. “If we don’t do this [shut down hotspots] now then I won’t be locking down ten postcodes, I will be locking down all post codes,” Dan warned yesterday.
