ScoMo Says Caps On International Arrivals Will Continue For Months Yet, Which Sucks For Aussies Stuck Overseas
ScoMo has announced today (Friday) he expects caps on incoming Aussie international travellers to remain in place for “some months”, reports the ABC.
In a presser today, the PM said he and the National Cabinet had agreed that “international travel constraints on inbound arrivals to Australia should be continued in their current form”.
“We look forward to at some point, that that might be able to be altered but at this point, we are not going to put any further strain on the quarantine arrangements around the country and that will remain in place now for some months,” he said.
Limits on incoming Aussie expats and their family members were introduced by the govt last month. At the time, ScoMo had said: “We also agreed today a reduction in the number of inbound arrivals into Australia across those ports that are able to accept returning Australian citizens and residents."
"Of course there are no flights going into Melbourne, into Victoria, for obvious reasons, and to ensure that we are mitigating and managing that risk," he said. "They will be cut by just over half across all the various ports that are taking those visitors. Sorry, those residents returning to Australia."
This is far from ideal for those still stuck overseas. Couple that with the fact this week The Guardian reported Aussie expats had been complaining airlines were cancelling their economy tickets in a bid to offer more business and first-class seats so they could be more profitable, and we can imagine those wanting to come home would be feeling very unsettled right about now.
Today (Friday), Victoria announced 450 new coronavirus cases and 11 deaths. NSW had 11 new cases. Also today, those entering NSW from Victoria are now required to spend 14 days in hotel quarantine at their own expense. Queensland will shut its borders to NSW and the ACT at 1am tomorrow (Saturday).
