Bad News, Melbourne: VIC Premier Warns Lockdown Likely To Be Extended Past August
Victorian Premier Dan Andrews said today (Friday) that there’s a good chance Melbourne lockdown won’t be finishing in three weeks, reports the ABC.
In a presser today, the Premier said: “I’ve got no announcements to make about next steps but it is important that all of us acknowledge that these numbers are still far too high and we could not open up with these numbers.”
He added: “We could not open up even with significantly less than these numbers."
The lockdown in Melbourne and the Mitchell Shire had originally been set to last six weeks, but yesterday, the state recorded a whopping 723 confirmed new cases and 13 deaths. Today, it noted 627 cases and eight deaths.
Dan Andrews said state and national health officials were looking into data collected from the past three weeks – the first half of the lockdown. “We have numbers that are too high, community transmission too high, and we need to do detailed analysis and potentially take further steps beyond the current framework,” he said.
Twenty-six Victorians under the age of 40 are currently in hospital with coronavirus.
Five are in intensive care. No idea when – or if – they'll make it home.
To anyone who still thinks this only affects older people:

Also today, the Victorian chief health officer, Brett Sutton, said the state is “exploring” the idea of a New Zealand-style lockdown, reports news.com.au. This would mean all businesses would be closed apart from supermarkets, pharmacies, petrol stations and healthcare.
“That’s what we’re exploring now,” Mr Sutton said. “Obviously, a step up in restrictions is a really significant measure but we are wanting it to be informed by evidence to the fullest extent possible, against that point of being proportionate.”
