Scott Morrison Says Restrictions Are Likely To Stay 'Til 2021 & Reckons State Borders Won’t Open Before Christmas
Another day in pandemic hell. In a presser on Monday, ScoMo warned that coronavirus restrictions are likely to stay in place until 2021 and said he isn’t going to force any states to open their borders, either.
Normal movement without any border restrictions likely won't return by this Christmas, and broader COVID-19 restrictions including social distancing rules are also here to stay at least into next year. Per reports, the PM did declare his “hope” in the presser that COVID restrictions would ease somewhat by the summer holidays, but warned that nothing is a done deal – and it's actually unlikely at this stage of the pandemic.
“I’ve been very careful not to get too far ahead on what might happen in December or March,” the PM said via 7News. (March is the revised end date of JobKeeper.) “We should work together on these things. We should continue to assess what the medical situation is and make very transparent decisions about those matters and I think that aids its constitutionality.”
Currently, South Australia is closed to Victoria and requires those from NSW and ACT to self-isolate for 14 days. Queensland is currently shut to NSW and ACT. Western Australia is closed to the eastern states and could be until mid-next year. And the Northern Territory is likely to be closed to Victoria and Greater Sydney until the end of 2021, said the territory’s Chief Minister Michael Gunner this week.
ScoMo said states were welcome to make decisions on borders based on medical advice but urged them not to keep them closed longer than necessary.
“If circumstances change and certainly if they change in the way we hoped they would, well, I would welcome it if by Christmas, if it were possible,” he said. “But I think it’s unlikely that we’ll be able to move back to a restriction-free society.”
Of suggestions elderly Aussies should be sacrificed to 'save the economy' (truly fucking disgusting), ScoMo said: “That is just a hideous thought. An absolutely amoral, hideous thought. One I have had no countenance with from the very first time it was suggested.”
This virus is wicked.
It doesn't discriminate. It does not stop.
And young or old – its impacts are brutal and potentially life-long.

Today, Victoria recorded 410 new cases of coronavirus and 21 deaths. Premier Dan Andrews said that while the case numbers were higher than in the previous three days, he was “confident the curve was flattening,” reports the ABC. "If you look at the average over the last seven days we are seeing the line come down," he said.
