A Fair Few People Aren't Getting Tested In VIC Because They Think COVID-19 Is A Conspiracy
Fucking hell: Victoria government officials have said more than 10,000 people in COVID-19 hotspots are refusing to be tested, with some saying they don't want to be tested because they believed the virus to be a conspiracy, reports the ABC.
“We have had more than 10,000 people who have refused to be tested,” Victorian Health Minister Jenny Mikakos said in a presser today (Friday). “That might be for a range of reasons, including that they may have already been tested in a different location, we are analysing that data to see exactly why people are refusing, but it is concerning that some people believe that coronavirus is a conspiracy or that it won’t impact on them.”
This is not good for fairly obvious reasons: the more people who refuse to take coronavirus seriously and therefore go about their lives as normal, the more easily the virus can spread. Regardless of conspiracy theorists, Mikakos said authorities had been “smashing targets for testing” with a testing blitz that’s seen more than 164,000 people tested.
The state had 66 new cases confirmed overnight, and currently has 442 active cases, with six people in ICU.
Also in the presser, Mikakos said a “super spreader” (an unusually contagious individual) may have been responsible for many of the new infections in Melbourne’s north and west.

"On Tuesday, I received a briefing of a genomic sequencing report that seemed to suggest that there seems to be a single source of infection for many of the cases that have gone across the northern and western suburbs of Melbourne," Mikakos said. "It appears to be even potentially a super spreader that has caused this upsurge in cases."
Earlier this week, 10 Melbourne postcodes went into full lockdown until July 29, with the govt ruling that residents could only leave their houses for four reasons: for work or school, for care or care giving, for daily exercise, and to pick up food and other essentials.

For the rest of the state, the reinstated restrictions are:
- Home gatherings are again limited to just five people (down from 10)
- Outdoor gatherings are limited to 10 (down from 20)
- Pubs, restaurants and cafés are to stay limited to 20 people (the limit was due to be upped to 50 yesterday)
- Private worship or religious ceremonies are limited to 20 people
- Real estate auctions, auction houses, open houses and community facilities are limited to 20 people
