VIC's Premier Is Threatening To Reintroduce A Strict Statewide Lockdown After A Spike In Cases
In a presser today (Tuesday), Dan Andrews said the fact that many of the state’s new cases likely came from unauthorised family gatherings is “just not on”.
“It doesn’t matter how many people are doing the wrong thing – everybody, everybody will pay the price if we get to a point where restrictions, either localised or across the state, need to be re-introduced,” he said.
Health Minister Greg Hunt reckons a localised lockdown would be best. He said the govt’s looking into rolling out tighter restrictions in only the six hardest-hit areas of Melbourne: Brimbank, Cardinia, Casey, Darebin, Hume and Moreland.
With news of the state’s case surge comes (of course) a mad dash by locals to get tested. A Twitter user reported four-hour wait times at some in-car testing sites and people getting turned away at others.

NSW Premier Gladys Berejiklian urged NSW-based families and business travellers not to visit Victoria right now. “You should not be travelling to Melbourne at this time because of the rate of community transmission,’’ she said in a presser.
“Do not go interstate. My advice is even stronger, do not go down there. Do not take the risk. It’s not worth it and people from those hot spots are actually disregarding what their own Premier and health officials are saying.
“People from those hot spots should not be travelling anywhere, let alone interstate.”
Chief Medical Officer Brendan Murphy told reporters yesterday that South Australia was sending Victoria a team of experts for three weeks to help with its contact tracing too, reports SBS.
That's why yesterday we announced that as of 11.59pm tonight, you can only have five guests in your home – and some of our plans to ease other restrictions will be delayed.
We simply have to stay the course on this.
We've given up far, far too much to throw it all away now.

In the meantime, heres a reminder of Victoria's reinstated lockdown rules, that came into affect yesterday.
- Home gatherings are again limited to just five people (down from 10)
- Outdoor gatherings are limited to 10 (down from 20)
- Pubs, restaurants and cafés are to stay limited to 20 people (the limit was due to be upped to 50 yesterday)
- Private worship or religious ceremonies are limited to 20 people
- Real estate auctions, auction houses, open houses and community facilities are limited to 20 people
Expect these new rules to be strictly enforced, with Dan Andrews saying over the weekend: “We will also go door-to-door not just in getting good public health advice out to people, we’ll go door-to-door if we have to make sure people are doing the right thing.”
