INTERVIEW – Darren Hayes
Darren Hayes took fans ‘To The Moon and Back’ with his killer live set at the 2012 Optus ONE80PROJECT Festival this week.
Returning to our shores following his ‘The Secret Tour’ last year, the Aussie superstar gave a breath-taking acoustic performance at the Ford Focus Moonlight Cinema in Centennial Park, Sydney.
And now the former Savage Garden frontman, who recently dropped his fourth album ‘Secret Codes & Battleships’ is tipped to spend even more time on our shores after being announced as a mentor for ‘The Voice Australia’ alongside his pop buddy Delta Goodrem.
We caught up with the ARIA-Award winning singer to talk his “insane” life, reality TV and what’s in store for 2012…
MTV: Welcome back to Oz Darren! How does it feel to be home?
Darren: I have to be honest…it's kind of a guilty pleasure to be home because I don’t get to come home enough.
MTV: You just performed at the Optus ONE80PROJECT Festival – how did you get involved with the initiative?
Darren: I was really honoured because I don’t often put myself into that field and my husband’s a film maker, so I guess I’m kind of aware of film festivals and things that are going on so, I kinda checked it out and thought, yeah this’d be amazing please let me do it!
MTV: The project is all about discovering new talent - what’s your advice for people starting out in the showbiz industry?
Darren: I guess you have to have a titanium heart. Somewhere there’s a fire with about a hundred and fifty official rejection letters from every single label in the world when Savage Garden first began and I clearly didn’t pay attention to that, so I think the idea of being rejected has to be something you decide…and you have to be a little bit insane actually to continue on until you succeed.
MTV: You recently dropped your fourth solo record ‘Secret Codes & Battleships’ – tell us a bit about it…
Darren: I’m very proud of it. It took four years to write and record and it’s probably the most commercial record I’ve made in a long time.
MTV: You’ve just been announced as a mentor on The Voice Australia alongside your pal Delta Goodrem – how did that come about?
Darren: I really love Delta Goodrem, so when she asked if I would be involved I was thrilled and there was some discussion, or some rumours about me being involved in The Voice anyway and I was flattered.
MTV: What can fans expect from her as a judge?
Darren: I’m really thrilled that Australia is going to get to see the person that I know, because she’s actually very funny, and she’s not opposed to take the mickey out of herself and other people. I think sometimes she’s got this image where she’s perfect, and she is kind of perfect, but I think the person she is off camera is actually much more interesting and I think that’s coming through in her new music, and its coming through in her role on The Voice, so I’m thrilled for her.
MTV: She’s set to drop her new album this year - have you heard any of it yet?
Darren: Oh, I can’t say anything about Delta’s record, I’m just excited! She’s been making it for years and I spent some time with her in Los Angeles when she was recording and she just seemed to be writing for ever and ever and ever. I think it’s going to be great.
MTV: Lastly, tell us what else you’ve got coming up for 2012…
Darren: 2012 for me is more touring. I’m just about to do a second leg of a tour that I started in October last year. So in the UK in September I’ll be taking that show out again and on the road. There’s some talk for us to take it to South America and to Asia, and I’m hoping to bring the tour back to Australia again.
Make sure you get your hands on Darren’s explosive album ‘Secret Codes & Battleships’ out now!
