ONE80PROJECT Festival Goss!
The Ford Focus Moonlight Cinema in Centennial Park was transformed last night for the 2012 Optus ONE80PROJECT Festival, with over a thousand Sydneysiders braving the bad weather to celebrate Australia’s finest budding film and TV talent!
Armed with picnics - and ponchos! – the crowd settled in to a venue decked out with dozens of glowing Chinese lanterns, yellow and white flags and hundreds of beanbags dotted across the grass.
Hosts Fitzy and Wippa kicked things off by introducing the finished pilot from last year’s winners, ‘SICK!’. Brothers Christiaan and Connor Van Vuuren worked wonders with their $180,000 production budget, bringing the online world of YouTube, Facebook and Battlecraft to life in an action-packed one hour episode.
Soon after, our Top 10 entries were shown on the giant screen - it was fantastic to see such a high calibre of entries, with each of the projects receiving hearty applause from the crowd. Then it was time to announce what everyone had been waiting for – the overall winner of the Optus ONE80PROJECT!
Two members of our distinguished judging panel were on hand to dish out the prizes – Aussie acting icon David Wenham (best known for his roles in ‘Moulin Rouge,’ ‘Lord Of The Rings’ and ‘Killing Time’) and 2010 Optus ONE80PROJECT winner, Director Maia Horniak.
“Hats off to Optus and MTV for a first class competition and an amazing night” said Wenham, before opening the winners envelopes. Drumroll please…
In an Optus ONE80PROJECT first, gritty drama ‘Deadbeat Dads’ took out the trifecta, winning the Judges’ Choice award, the Public Vote award and the prize for Best Student Entry! Ben Mathews, Kent Pearson and Shelley McLaren will now see their winning three minute pilot developed into a one hour TV drama to be shown on MTV Australia and New Zealand, with a production budget of $180,000 and a $10,000 cash prize.
“I was at the Optus ONE80PROJECT this time last year and I wouldn’t have imagined we’d be here tonight” said Mathews.
“This is an absolute thrill, an honour, a shock. We want to make this the best possible pilot we can. We want it to be high quality television, high quality drama and something that has the potential to go to series.”
This year’s competition also awarded a $5,000 cash prize for the best pilot filmed on a mobile phone, with the Best Mobile Entry going to Jodie Lee Behrendorff for ‘Just Looking’.
But the night didn’t end there! DJ Nina Las Vegas kept the party pumping and set the stage for the big performance of the night, from multi-ARIA Award winning Australian music legend Darren Hayes.
Hayes treated the crowd to a beautiful acoustic set which included his hits ’To The Moon And Back,’ ‘Insatiable’ ‘I Want You’ (with a little INXS thrown in for good measure!) and a stunning cover of Madonna’s ‘Like A Prayer’.
Despite the rain it was a fantastic night with a huge amount of homegrown talent on show. A big thanks to Optus and everyone else who made it happen, and congratulations once again to our winners ‘Deadbeat Dads’!
