21 Questions with Dillon Francis
You may recognise Dillion Francis from social media channels such as Instagram, Tinder or Puursonals. Or perhaps you’ve bonded over shoeys with his Australian alter-ego Treva. We caught up with the Mad Decent producer backstage before his monster set at Field Day 2015 to find out what it’s like to live in his world (“good, ‘cos I don’t want to tell anyone about my f*cking inspirations anymore”).
Go-to fast-food on tour: Oh man, Taco Bell or Burger King. And I guess if I’m in Australia then its Hungry Jack’s. Hungry Jack’s is probably the only fast food I eat here.
Biggest bender you’ve ever been on: The Mad Decent boat party. Four days of straight drinking in the Bahamas.
What’s your favourite hangover food: Dominos pizza. Cheeseburger flavour. It’s so awful but you’re instantly happy.
Go-to outfit for your gigs: All black everything. Suits.
Favourite phone game: It’s this one called Bloons TD 5. It’s a tower strategy game. It’s really stupid.
Drink of choice: Ciroc with water and a dash of something.
Most famous person in your phonebook: Zac Efron. He Face Timed me today.
What do you talk about: How much we miss each other.
What’s the best set you’ve seen lately: I was watching Kaytranada, he’s so awesome. He just doesn’t care. He has the best swag about him. Him and Mr. Carmack are my two favourite people.
Favourite album: The Best of the Smiths.
Most important item to pack before you go on tour: Pants.
The worst date you’ve been on: I hope this girl doesn’t read this… it was so bad that I had to call my friends to come and meet me at a bar and then be like ‘dude you have to go back into the studio, that remix you turned in today is not good.’ I was like, ‘oh I gotta go’. It was this whole elaborate thing and she kept trying to kiss me. We did drop her home though… gave her a ride [laughs]. Then I went to a party and picked up another girl. That was a solid night.
Most days you’ve gone without a shower: Man I’ve definitely gone like eight days when I’m in the studio. Every day you wake up and just wear the same clothes. I smelt so bad this one time and I went to my mum’s house. She was like ‘What the f*ck why do you smell like shit Dillon?!’ And I was like, ‘I was in the studio’ and she was like ‘well take a f*cking shower.’
Most memorable Aussie festival experience: Big day out when I was carrying Flume across the Major Lazer stage and Mac Miller was there too. That festival was just so much fun. It was insanity the whole time.
Favourite road trip game: Sleeping.
One thing you miss about home: My bed. And just the feeling of being at home. When I first started touring I never understood what homesickness was. I’m homesick right now. I’m yearning.
Favourite on the road tradition: Coffee time in the morning.
What kind: Cold-pressed.
An Australian artist you’ve got your eye on: Like sexually? No I’m just kidding. I started hearing Wave Racer’s music a lot last year and started following him. I’ve always been a massive fan of Flume. I love What So Not.
You look sad: I wish Emoh was here.
If you had to pick a different artist name: This is why I use my real name because I’m that bad at picking names. I tried so many different ones and they were all so shitty. One was just ‘Bird.’ Like I mean, why not? One was Kid O – that was when I was 18. One was ‘Screech’ – Saved by the Bell reference. I had so many bad names; thank God I didn’t stick with them. Maybe Steve ‘Blow’ Jobs or Big ‘Wang’ Newton. What about Robin Will Smith. It’s Robin Williams and Will Smith put together. He’s funny and he’s f*ckin’ really good at everything. It’s a super group. It’s like Jack Ü but actors.
