First Times With... Dune Rats
If we weren't quite warmed up yet for the day's festivities, some seriously eRATic Dune Rats behaviour, made sure Day two of Splendour in The Mud (there is no grass in sight) kicked off on a 'high' note.
Aside from BC trying to hook up with one of our reporters, our first interview with the notorious partiers reaped golden anecdotes from the band's heydays.
MTV: First time you kissed a girl?
Danny: I'd like to say it was when I was four with a girl during a reenactment of The Little Mermaid. It's the only way I could score a kiss.
MTV: First show you ever played?
Danny: We played under a house at BC’s work colleauge’s place, there was like four people and it was great. It would have been like four of five years ago.
MTV: First festival you ever played?
Danny: I think it was Big Day Out, but not the last one, we tried to play on the last one but they said we weren’t big enough.
MTV: Well look at you guys now...
Danny: Yeah I mean, look at us, we’re rubbing shoulders with the elite [laughs]. No but seriously, Big Day Out was great. We also played Laneway this year which was our first family kind-of festival. There was like Courtney Barnett, the POND guys, such a good crew. Tkay Maidza is our adopted little sister. Genetically, we’re 100% the same.
MTV: First time you read a good review about yourselves?
Danny: Never. We’ve never read a review. If you listen to good reviews, then you’ll listen to the bad ones, so it’s catch 22. So if you don’t read any reviews then you never give a shit.
MTV: First time you got a call from a record label?
Danny: It was Aaron from Spunk Records - if you don’t know them in Australia, they’re fucking legit. They’re one of the few morally just record labels in the business. They actually think about what the band actually wants. So Aaron, who’s a good mate of ours, pulled us in and was like ‘I’d love to release something for you guys, I'd love to manage you guys, but to be honest with you guys, I think one of you guys is going to be dead in six months.’ And that was pretty funny to us because we rocked up to the meeting with no shoes on looking pasty as fuck because we had a big night the night before. So he was really the first person to show us love.
MTV: First MTV memory…
Danny: I think it was MTV: Unplugged - Nirvana. I stole the cassette from my sister who was older than me, and it had Crash Test Dummies on one side and MTV: Unplugged on the other.
MTV: First song you ever wrote..
BC: I was on an aeroplane and I was fucking six or something and Mum was like ‘It’s time for brunch’ and I was like ‘What’s brunch?’ and she’s like ‘breakfast and brunch’ so I wrote a song: "In between breakfast and lunch is brunch, in between breakfast and lunch is brunch."
MTV: First time you ever got recognised…
BC: As Allday? All the time. As Dune Rats? Never.
