Ellen DeGeneres’ Joke Comparing Lockdown In Her Mansion To, Um, Prison Left Ppl Very Unimpressed
Until recently, Ellen DeGeneres could do no wrong. But yesterday, fans were left unimpressed when she likened quarantining at home in her USD $27 million mansion to spending time in jail.
In the opening monologue for her US talk show, which she’s now hosting from her lounge room, DeGeneres described what it was like in lockdown in her mansion with her wife, Portia de Rossi.
“It’s nice, actually, because we get to spend time together and talk and just really get to know each other, right? Did you know [de Rossi] is Australian? Fascinating,” the comedian said, sarcastically.
She went on: “This is like being in jail is what it is. Mostly because I’ve been wearing the same clothes for 10 days and everyone in here is gay.”
Many took offence to the comparison, and took to Twitter to hit back. “Hey, Ellen, go volunteer at a grocery store or food bank,” one wrote. “Get on the front lines if being sequestered in your mansion is just too difficult. Unbelievable.”
Another said: “What a great look for Ellen as thousands of people sit in actual jail cells just hoping for the best without soap and basic protections”.

If you want to know how unfunny Hollywood is, I suggest you watch the quarentine version of The Ellen DeGeneres Show from her home without a laugh track.

Yikes. The tide certainly has seemed to turn against the American personality in recent days. It was only a few weeks ago that US comedian Kevin T. Porter tweeted that DeGeneres was “notoriously one of the meanest people alive”.
Right now we all need a little kindness. You know, like Ellen Degeneres always talks about! 😊❤️
She’s also notoriously one of the meanest people alive
Respond to this with the most insane stories you’ve heard about Ellen being mean & I’ll match every one w/ $2 to @LAFoodBank
— Kevin T. Porter (@KevinTPorter) March 20, 2020
Porter even went on to urge others to come forward backing his view, saying: “Respond to this with the most insane stories you’ve heard about Ellen being mean & I’ll match every one w/ $2 to @LAFoodBank”.
And boy were there some stories. The thread's here, if you're interested. Honestly, we don’t know what to think. But if everyone’s opinions on whether or not DeGeneres is or isn’t mean can keep generating money for charities, we guess we’re… not against it?
