How To Make A Career Out Of Being An Insta Fitspo Couple
In the past few years an interesting phenomenon has been gaining traction on social media: the rise of the Instagram 'fitspo' couple.
You know the people; they're toned, tanned and the ultimate beacons of health all wrapped up in a highly coveted package. But reaching beyond just looking sh*t hot in a bunch of pics, these fitspo couples are now making a career out of preaching their practices and a lot people wanna know their secrets.
We've teamed up with our good friends at Protein World to get to know Kayne Lawton and Jamie Allen and find out about how they've become one of the most followed couples on Instagram. Watch the episode above!
Where It All Begins
With a combined total of 283,000 Instagram followers, it's fair to say that when it comes to being fitness influencers, Kayne and Jamie are a hit.
But before the world of likes, re-posts, comments and DMs this Gold Coast couple were just like you and I. (Except, you know, really, really good looking.)
Kayne, a retired professional rugby league player, and Jamie, the founder of swimwear label Jaymes, both lived a humble life in the small suburb of Cudgen in Northern NSW until one Instagram post changed it all.
"It was Kayne and I in the water in Positano. I put it on Instagram and people were like, 'Oh my god!' They went nuts over it," Jamie told us about the picture that kickstarted this journey.
We throw around the term 'couple goals' so much these days, but what is it actually like to be on the receiving end of such a ~millennial~ compliment?
"It’s pretty cool to know that we’re liked," Kayne said. But he is quick to add, "It’s not like we try and do it to impress people."
"There’s so much more than what we look like and what we share on Instagram that’s for sure. It always blows me away when people say, 'I love how genuine you guys are,'" Jamie added.
Uploading a few hot piccies here and there might not seem like a hard slog, but these two approach their meticulously curated online brand much like you would any other business. Fully aware that their social platforms are an excellent marketing tool, do not mistake this couple for simply capitalising on their aesthetic features. While sure they're pretty to look at, their ethos is simple; train hard, fuel your body correctly and reap the benefits.
It might be the eye roll heard 'round the world, but these two truly want to impart their lifestyle choices onto the world so you can have a better quality of life too.
We've heard the statistics and we're all acutely aware by this stage that spending too much time online is probably not so great for your mental health. But for a fitspo couple that rely heavily on their social platforms you could easily see how the lines between online and reality become blurred.
"I’m very good at switching my phone off, putting it down and making 'me and you' time. I love sharing bits of my life, but I could not live my life through the camera," Jamie said.
These two work hard. There's just simply no way of cheating that. Even though they've been together for six years Jamie only started training around two years ago when she decided to go along with Kayne to the gym. Their attitude towards training and exercise isn't quite militant; they're eating fresh wholefoods, but of course there's a cheat day in there.
"She wasn’t really into it too much when I first met her," Kayne said. "But she got bitten by the bug and she's getting results and making progress. It's your own journey."
"I don’t lift super heavy because I find it a bit scary sometimes. So that’s why I do super sets, I lift as heavy as I can, but I'll super set everything so my heart rate is up," Jamie explained.
If you think it's all photoshoots on the beach, benching with the boys, counting calories and borderline thirst trap uploads with these two then think again. For both of them they can't stress enough the importance of a side hustle.
Since retiring from football, Kayne has set up a hugely successful online coaching business and Jamie's swimwear label Jaymes has customers all around the world.
"Helping people achieve their goals, physical or mental, and changing people’s lives is the most rewarding part the job," Kayne said.
