Perk Up ‘Coz We Might Have A New Date For The 'Friends' Reunion Special & Damn Are We Ready
So we know Coronavirus has f*cked a lot of shit up everywhere, and one of those things was the Friends Reunion Special.
After years of rumours and fans basically begging on their hands and knees (guilty), news FINALLY broke that our fave ‘90s sitcom was returning in a ~professional~ capacity for a new HBO special and we cried real tears of joy.
Then the cast confirmed it via Insta, with Jennifer Aniston, Courtney Cox, Lisa Kudrow, Matt LeBlanc, Matthew Perry and David Schwimmer all posting the same pic with the caption 'It's happening...' and omg it was HAPPENING.
Until Coronavius halted the project indefinitely. And then we actually cried.
Intended to air on HBO Max on May 27, (when the streaming service launches), the special ep was delayed due to the pandemic.
But now like music to our ears (or Phoebe Buffay singing ‘Smelly Cat’ to us), we may have a new date. WarnerMedia Entertainment and Direct-to-Consumer chairman Bob Greenblatt said the reunion ep could film at the end of the American summer (AKA our winter).
“At first we thought, shows will be delayed for a month or two at the most, and now it seems like it’s going to be far longer than that,” Greenblatt said during the NAB Show Executive Leadership Summit. “We’re holding out for being able to get this special done hopefully by the end of the summer, if the stars align and hopefully we can get back into production. We do think there’s a value to having a big, raucous live audience to experience these six great friends coming back together and we didn’t want to just suddenly do it on a web call with, you know, six squares and people shooting from their kitchens and bedrooms.”
True dat, Blatt-y. We want Joey and Chandler’s apartment. And Monica and Rachel’s apartment. We want Central Perk goddammit. But he did add that if the stay-at-home directive continues, they could explore a virtual route.
“At the moment, we’re trying to look to the future and get this thing done in a more conventional way, and I think it’s worth waiting for. We would have loved to have had it on [HBO Max on] Day One, but at the same time, if we can get it launched in the fall, I think it’ll be something that we can have the audience really looking forward to as well.”
Hmm, as long as we get a rendition of ‘Smelly Cat’, we’ll be happy.
While we wait we'll just be over here watching TikTok video's of one of Phoebe's triplets who is, yup, all grown up. The resemblance is uncanny, go figure.
