Get Briefed: The Gladys Berejiklian Scandal
Notes on a (Gladys Berejiklian) scandal.
In news that has shocked the grey-toned world of state politics, NSW premier Gladys Berejiklian has been accused of being complicit in corruption.
At a grilling by the Independent Commission Against Corruption (ICAC) yesterday, Gladys Berejiklian revealed to have privately been in a “close, personal” relationship with disgraced MP Daryl Maguire from 2015 to August 2020.
So, who is this Daryl person and why should you care? Enter: our incredibly brief, three-minutes-or-less overview.
Who Is Daryl Maguire?
The word “disgraced" often precedes any description of former MP Daryl Maguire, who resigned from parliament in 2018.
The resignation came after admitting in a seperate ICAC inquiry that he sought to profit from dodgy property deals; basically meaning that he was engaging in corruption as an MP. Get more info about his career here.
On the one hand, yep, Gladys is human.
On the other, she secretly accepted and even encouraged the constant deal-making of her boyfriend, who was leveraging his relationship to the government she led.
All for his personal enrichment - not the people of NSW

Daryl is still under investigation by ICAC for apparently using his political influence to sway political deals to get more money for himself. He's set to front the commission again tomorrow.
Can’t MPs Have Private Relationships?
They can, but the allegation is that Gladys Berejiklian knew about the corruption that Daryl Maguire was engaging with prior to it being disclosed to ICAC in 2018.
Opposition leader Jodi McKay told ABC News Breakfast this morning Gladys was therefore “complicit in corruption”, as she knew what Daryl was up to and didn’t disclose it to the appropriate people (as MPs are meant to do).

Have a read of this media release from 2018 about Gladys being ‘shocked’ by Daryl’s conduct and it all starts to look pretty dodgy.

What's Next For Gladys Berejiklian?
“I stuffed up in my personal life, and I accept that”, Gladys told reporters after her ICAC grilling. She has refused to resign, but will obviously face a lot of criticism in the NSW parliament (sitting today).
Opposition leader Jodi McKay reckons the Labor party will hold off on launching a no-confidence motion today, preferring to wait until Daryl gives evidence to ICAC tomorrow.
