Soundwave: MTV’s top ten moments in history!
It’s hard to believe that only 10 years ago, Soundwave was a small stage at a Perth-based water sports festival: ‘The Gravity Games.’
With the 2014 lineup announcement just around the corner (i.e. THIS FRIDAY), we’ve taken a trip down memory lane and compiled our favourite SW moments from its humble beginnings as an action sports sideshow.
1. The First Headliner: Good Charlotte, 2004
Hitting the stage under the ‘Gravity Soundwave’ banner back in 2004, Good Charlotte were the first official headliners of the festival, alongside local bands Gyroscope and Regurgitator.
However, after a very public Twitter spat with festival organiser AJ Maddah, it’s highly unlikely that the band will ever return to the iconic main stage.
2. City and Colour: 2008
Dallas Green went all out at the 2008 shows - performing favourites as the guitarist/vocalist of Alexisonfire while also introducing the audience to his mellow side-project, City and Colour.
3. The Dudesons: 2009
As the 2009 MC’s, the Finnish stuntmen entertained the crowd through set-changes, switching between blindfolded boxing and the human dartboard. As in, throwing darts at a human chest. To top it off, the Adelaide show saw Jukka throw a bullseye, right into Jarppi’s belly button.
4. Bloodhound Gang: 2009
It’s not every day that you see a crowd full of metal-heads reduced to sexually frustrated 13-year-olds. And yet that’s what happens when the Bloodhound Gang takes to the stage and pumps out a smutty pop song. Oh, and there was boobies too.
5. Faith No More: 2010
Nothing like a bit of on-stage nakedness and mid-gig chat roulette to make a memorable impression on Sydney…
6. Jane’s Addiction: 2010
Accompanied by a range of dancing ladies, the 2010 Soundwave marked the last tour for the band - which has reformed in 2008 - with Eric Avery concluding: “That’s it. With equal parts regret and relief, the Jane’s Addiction experiment is at an end.”
7. Alexisonfire: 2010
In the scorching heat of the 2010 tour, Alexisonfire frontman George Pettit rolled off the stage post-show and had a dirt bath, rubbing dried up mud all over his sweat-soaked body.
8. Fucked Up: 2011
The headliners proved punk was still very much alive with an energetic performance, complete with hair-ripping, lots of hugging, and force-feeding the mic to members of the crowd.
9. Strung Out: 2012
Most people stick to churches, but Strung Out’s Jake Riley settled for the Soundwave stage. The guitarist said “I do” to long-term girlfriend Eliza in front of the crowd, with Bert McCraken of The Used posing as a bridesmaid. Even more bizarre, Greg Hetson from Bad Religion (who is apparently a certified marriage celebrant) performed the ceremony - how romantic.
10. The Entire 2013 Anniversary Lineup
If metal, punk and rock had a love-child, it would be called ‘Soundwave 2013.’ With over 72 acts, including Blink-182, Linkin Park and Metallica, the 2013 festival revived every Australian’s inner teenager, and proved to be the biggest music party of the year.
We only hope every other anniversary is just like this one.
Stay tuned to MTV.com.au for the full 2014 Soundwave lineup announcement coming this Friday!
