Hayden James Shares How He Proposed To His Wife In Italy...Prepare To Cry
We caught up with Australian singer/songwriter and producer Hayden James at Splendour in the Grass to talk remixes and his "firsts".
Get your mind out of the gutter, James is a gentleman and even made us tear up over the incredibly romantic proposal story he shared, while his now wife sat on his knee smiling from ear-to-ear. Seriously, prepare to cry.
But first James dished on the Odesza remix of his hit 'Something About You' that dropped yesterday (July 27)...
Hayden: I asked Ben Pearce and the Odesza guys to remix the track and then a few people come to me as well. I’m honoured that people enjoy my music so much, that they want to do something with it and put their spin on it. My favourite is the Odesza.
Firsts... with Hayden James
First time I kissed a girl I was about 12 or 13 and it was outside a train station, there was lots of tongue and I didn’t know what the fuck was going on and it wasn’t that awesome [laughs].
First time I played a gig was at my brother’s birthday party, I was 14 and my parents liked it [laughs].
My first festival experience was Splendour in the Grass five years ago, and we camped. The Strokes were headlining.
My first bad review, well I haven’t been playing live too long, but about a year ago someone reviewed my set at a festival called The Plot and they were mentioning songs that I didn’t even play in my set and they gave me a bit of a rub down as well. I was like “What! You weren’t even there!” Come to a show you review instead of making something up.
The first TV show I became addicted to was Frasier. I love Frasier, I probably watch two episodes a day. I’ve probably watched them all three or four times.
The first time I got a call from a record label was three years ago from Future Classic, Nathan, saying come into the office and let’s talk about your music. I was in Sydney in my house.
First time I felt legit was recently when I won an inthemix award for best song of the year. I’ve never won an award for my music before, so that was pretty amazing, that’s when I felt legit.
First MTV memory, well I always watch the MTV Video Music Awards, and when Britney and Madonna kissed, yeah that’s a standout for me [laughs] that’s so bad!
The first song I ever wrote was a song called ‘Permission To Love’ and it’s about me asking my now wife’s parents for her hand. We were in Santa Margherita, I asked her on top of a mountain near a church. She’s right there actually.
*Jen comes and sits on Hayden's knee, and we believe in love again*
Jen: I had no idea, Hayden said he had a meeting with his manager, but he was having dinner with my parents and asked them for my hand. The proposal was very romantic, he made me walk up to this monastery that was like an hour up a hill and proposed to me down on one knee and we spent the rest of the trip just chilling out and seeing Italy.
Hayden: All my songs are pretty much about Jen.
WHAT A GUY.
