And James Charles' Latest Public Apology Goes To.. Alicia Keys
James Charles has apologised for the second time in as many weeks. This time he's sending his best to Alicia Keys after criticising her upcoming beauty brand, saying it was a misunderstanding and calling his comments a “microaggression”.
Earlier this week, e.l.f. Beauty announced they were teaming up with Alicia to create a “lifestyle beauty brand” of “skin-loving, dermatologist-developed, cruelty-free products”, set to launch in 2021.
Very exciting. However, James didn’t think so. The beauty YouTuber took to Twitter to share his thoughts: “people who do not wear makeup should not be coming out with makeup brands but that’s just my opinion ... people assumed I was shading my own friends or people I love which is not the case lol.”
Naturally, fans weren’t impressed with James’ dig, calling him out for 'gatekeeping' the industry, and thinking of his own profits before what's best for his fans and makeup consumers. James has now since apologised to Alicia in a lengthy statement released online. It reads: “A few years, [Alicia] announced that she no longer would wear makeup, so I was bothered because many celebrities come into the beauty space as a cash grab without any actual passion and then leave.”
He continued: “I deleted the tweet after a few mins because it’s childish to indirect tweet someone & I am not the gatekeeper of makeup … I am now glad that I DID delete it because after reading further, I learned that the beauty line is SKINCARE. This was my mistake and I should’ve read more about tweeting, because literally who BETTER to talk about keeping your skin clear without makeup?”
“Regardless of my intention with my tweet, it ended up being a microaggression against someone I respect, so to @aliciakeys I owe a direct apology – I’m sorry.”

No word yet from Alicia, but according to James, she should see his message. When someone commented on his apology post that James shouldn't have bothered apologising because he’s “not on her radar”, he replied: "she follows me on Instagram but alright lol." Never test a beauty YouTuber.
