MTV INTERVIEW │JAY SEAN
He’s been dubbed the most successful male urban artist in the UK, and his huge hits ‘Down’ and ‘Do you Remember’ have made Jay Sean a success worldwide.
After storming the charts with his third album ‘All or Nothing,’ and working with the likes of Lil Wayne and Sean Paul , the singer hit Australia for 2010’s first urban pop music tour, ‘Supafest.’
MTV met with Jay to talk performing Down Under, working with Mary J Blige , and free-styling backstage.
MTV: You’ve just completed the ‘Supafest’ tour in Oz. How was it?
Jay: It’s been the best tour I’ve done so far. We just had so much fun and so much jokes. We laughed everyday, hung out together, it was incredible. We got to know each other really well.
MTV: You were performing with the likes of Akon, Sean Paul and Eve. Can you give us any backstage goss?
Jay: Yeah at the Sydney show, after the show was done, me, Sean Paul and Eve, we were all free-styling in Sean Paul’s room, drinks were flowing and we had my beat boxer there and he was switching it up. There were about 50 people in the room, dancers, crew, entourage, all just partying.
MTV: You've previously collaborated with Sean Paul on your single 'Do You Remember' . Who else at the festival would you like to work with?
Jay: We are all probably going to do something with each other. Pitbull's just...he's brought his studio with him, Sean's got his studio with him. I just gave Pitbull a track of mine, well it's something I want him to do a little something on. I think he will. So I think that might be a possibility right there.
And Akon I'm sure I'm going to end up working with him because we've been talking about it for ages. So you know it's been the right people and the right chemistry right there.
MTV: What advice would you give to upcoming Australian urban artists?
Jay: You know what, it's hard doing what we do, that genre of music. The only thing I can say is that now seems to be the time where you can create your own hype. You can create your opportunities because a lot of people are doing this via the web. And I mean that wasn't possible 7 years ago when I started. You had to literally just get spotted at showcases or whatever. Now record company execs are going on to YouTube and looking at people singing in their bedroom. I mean we didn't have that back then. So I'd say take advantage of that.
MTV: You used to study medicine. If your music career ended tomorrow would you go back to it?
Jay: I’m never a believer in going back in anything. You move forward, so that’s my whole mentality, you make moves to go forward not back.
MTV: So what else does 2010 hold for you?
Jay: 2010 is going to be crazy because I'm dropping the new album. In terms of working with people, it's been really pretty crazy, the opportunities that have opened up since the success of 'Down' and 'Do You Remember' and stuff like that. So I've been talking to some really really big heavyweights in the game. I just did a song with Mary J Blige. And she's a legend. So that one's called 'Each Tear' so look out for that. The video goes out for that as well so that's something you gotta look out for. And I'm touring America as well. It's just busy man.
