Jeffree Star Finally Breaks His Silence With Sassy 'Apology Video'; Addresses James Charles, Shane Dawson & Tati Westbrook

Twitter's not impressed.

Jeffree Star has entered the chat. After weeks of nothing from the beauty YouTuber, Star has finally spoken out. It's the first time we've heard from Jeffree since Shane Dawson "quit" the beauty YouTuber world, setting off a chain of events and controversies that haven't put either of the best friends in a good light (a recap of just those events is here).

In a 10-minute video titled "Doing What’s Right", the makeup mogul addressed all that’s unfolded in the past few weeks, which included Tati Westbrook releasing a video that saw her accusing Jeffree and Shane of manipulating her into making the "Bye Sister" video. The clip had called out James Charles for making advances towards straight men (Star labelled him a "predator" at the time, and called him a "danger to society") and for being a "bad role model", resulting in James losing millions of YouTube subscribers and pushing him to contemplate suicide.

Seated on an elaborate gold couch, a pink bathrobe-clad Jeffree starts, "I’ve been silent for a very long time, and I know that’s very rare for me. Now in the past, I have been guilty of speaking out of anger, out of frustration, out of my emotions."

He then brought up his 2019 video, "Never Doing This Again", in which he addressed his feud with James. This time around, he said he knew it was expected he talk about “the situation” – referring to the controversy surrounding "Bye Sister" and Tati's latest video, "Breaking My Silence". Without mentioning Tati by name, Jeffree said: “It’s disgusting, it’s awful and none of it should’ve happened. So, James, I am truly sorry for my actions and my behaviour.” Jeffree also says he has never blackmailed anyone, committed a crime nor had he been to jail.

The Jeffree Star Cosmetics CEO continued, saying he wouldn’t be showing a “million text messages” to justify his claim of innocence, but that his lawyers were considering options. "I know this may sound shocking coming from my mouth, but when you accept that you are the problem, you can become the solution," he said.

As for his friendship with Shane Dawson, who has received major backlash after old videos of him joking about racism and paedophilia resurfaced, Jeffree said he wouldn't be cutting him out of his life nor would he be distancing himself. "I know Shane from now. I don't know Shane from 10 years ago, and he doesn't know me from 10 years ago. Now do I agree with Shane's past actions? Of course I don't. And does he agree with my past behavior? Of course he doesn't. I know the amazing person he is today, and you don't abandon your friends."

Also in the video, Jeffree brought up the deaths of Breonna Taylor, Elijah McClain and Black trans women. Many commenters said it was in poor taste to insert himself in the Black Lives Matter movement, seemingly to distract from his problematic behaviour and “escape accountability”. "BLM is not a prop for you to use in order to clear your record," one commenter wrote. Jeffree has made racist statements in the past, as well as been accused of using anti-Semitic and xenophobic slurs; so his comments felt even more left of field and inappropriate.

The video ended with Jeffree announcing a new makeup launch for August and promising to be back with new content on his channel “very soon”.
