This is hardly new advice, but the best way to get your foot in the door is to gain as much experience as possible. Always be on the lookout for interesting internships in companies that you like or better yet get networking and make yourself available to help out at events pro bono. It might not pay now but it will definitely pay off in the future.
If you're passionate about not only entering the social media industry but also growing a successful career, then start connecting with people on LinkedIn who inspire you. Be bold and send a request to someone you admire and if you're lucky they might even give you a few titbits on how to crack the industry.
Crank up your digital footprint to expose your expertise. That means starting a blog, connecting with other accounts, start a YouTube channel, or start firing off some Tweets. The more ingrained you are in the social media world on a professional level, the more you will have the edge over other candidates when applying for jobs.

Through connecting online you'll be able to hear about events that will help you network with the right people in the industry. It might seem a bit overwhelming to begin with but soon enough you'll be hobnobbing with the rest of the social media regulars.
