Justin Bieber was announced the first winner at the ‘2012 Billboard Music Awards’ in Las Vegas , picking up the ‘Social Artist of the Year’ award.
“First of all, I just want to say how much of a blessing it’s been the past three or four years, just growing up in front of everybody,” the pop superstar told the audience.
Next up was Katy Perry, who received the ‘Spotlight Award’, which was presented to her by Lisa Marie Presley.
“This is cool! They told me the only other person who’s received this award is Michael Jackson, so I feel incredibly honoured to be in the same category – although I don’t compare at all!” Katy gushed.
Next, Kelly Clarkson and The Wanted performed, before Miley Cyrus took to the stage to reveal that Wiz Khalifa had won this year’s ‘Best New Artist’ award.
There was also a special tribute for the late singer Whitney Houston. John Legend performed ‘Greatest Love of All,’ followed by ‘American Idol’ winner Jordin Sparks, who sang ‘I Will Always Love you.’
Following the performance, Whitney’s sister-in-law Pat Houston and Whitney’s daughter Bobbi Kristina accepted the ‘Millennium Award’ on the idol’s behalf.
"I just wanna say thank you to everyone who supported us through it all. Not just from when it was good, but when it was bad too. Just everything,” Bobbi said with tears in her eyes.
“Thank you so much for showing that much love 'cause she deserved it. I'm just blessed to have been in such an incredible woman's life."
