Kristen Stewart Gets Honest About Being Queer In The Public Eye

Kristen Stewart has given a rare interview about her love life.

The actress opens up in a rare interview about her love life.

In a super candid new interview for InStyle's November issue, Kristen Stewart has shared her experience of coming out as queer while in the public eye, saying she struggled to keep her relationships private and felt pressured to represent all queer people.

When asked whether the 30-year-old actress’ own experiences drew her to upcoming film Happiest Season, which sees a woman named Harper who hasn’t come out to her family yet bring her girlfriend Abby (played by Kristen) home for Christmas, Kristen said it had.

“Yeah. The first time I ever dated a girl, I was immediately being asked if I was a lesbian,” she said “And it's like, 'God, I'm 21 years old.' I felt like maybe there were things that have hurt people I've been with. Not because I felt ashamed of being openly gay but because I didn't like giving myself to the public, in a way. It felt like such thievery. This was a period of time when I was sort of cagey.”

Kristen, who’s currently dating screenwriter Dylan Meyer, previously dated Michael Angarano, Robert Pattinson, Alicia Cargile and Soko – all relationships she very much tried to keep under wraps.

She continued: “Even in my previous relationships, which were straight, we did everything we could to not be photographed doing things—things that would become not ours. So I think the added pressure of representing a group of people, of representing queerness, wasn't something I understood then. Only now can I see it.”

“Retrospectively, I can tell you I have experience with this story. But back then I would have been like, 'No, I'm fine. My parents are fine with it. Everything's fine.' That's bullshit. It's been hard. It's been weird. It's that way for everyone."

Next up for Kristen on the acting front is a role in upcoming drama Spencer, which focuses on an important three days Princess Diana spent at Queen Elizabeth II’s Sandringham estate over Christmas in the early 1990s. In the InStyle interview, Kristen revealed how hard it’s been for her to learn Diana’s posh English accent.

“The accent is intimidating as all hell because people know that voice, and it’s so, so distinct and particular,” she said. “I’m working on it now and already have my dialect coach.”

Accents aside, this is set to be a powerful role for Kristen Stewart; Happiest Season presents a story that all too many can relate to.
