With performances by Lady Gaga, Katy Perry, Kanye West, Justin Timberlake, Miley Cyrus, Macklemore & Ryan Lewis, Bruno Mars and Robin Thicke – the 2013 VMAs are already promising to be the biggest awards show of the season. Miley Cyrus is on the red carpet and she’s spilling the beans on her performance – yes ladies and gents – she’s gonna be twerking! Don’t forget , you can still vote for Best Song of the Summer so use the hashtag and get your fave artist trending!
Robin Thicke is chatting to MTV on the red carpet and he says he’s going to be bringing the “love” and the “sexy” for his performance, ooh yeah!
Little Monsters, get ready! Lady Gaga has arrived and she’s looking fierce in a black floor-length gown!
“I feel great, I’m so excited,” she tells MTV of her upcoming curtain-raising performance. “It’s going to be awesome, we’ve been rehearsing for a while … it’s a great show.”
Cut to Justin Timberlake backstage with MTV’s Sway Calloway and he’s revealed there’s a bit of feeling of nostalgia getting back up on the VMA stage! But he hasn’t given away any info about his performance – guess we’ll just have to wait and see!
Pink feat. Nate Ruess and 30 Seconds to Mars have just won the first awards of the night during the pre-show! 30STM takes the Moonman for Best Rock Video and 'Just Give Me A Reason' wins Best Collaboration.
The first performance of the night is here – Austin Mahone is rocking the red carpet with a bevy of backup dancers dressed in all black and red everything, yeow! The teen idol is performing his track ‘What About Love,’ working his way around the outdoor venue before taking the stage in front of hundreds of screaming fans, with iPhones at the ready.
Ariana Grande follows immediately, kicking her performance off with an incredible a cappella intro. What a voice! The Nickelodeon cutie is dressed in a sugary sweet lilac dress and moves from her place on the podium to the red carpet after seamlessly segueing into her hit track ‘The Way.’
Katy Perry is roaring on the red carpet in a sleek thigh-revealing leopard-print dress. “Rough, tough and ready to rumble” is how the star has described her performance tonight – love it!
We’ve just spotted the legendary Daft Punk on the red carpet live video feed!! Do you think we’ll be ‘getting lucky’ tonight?
One Direction are in the house!! And guess what, they’re currently in the lead for Song of the Summer!
Pharrell Williams and his crew have arrived on the red carpet on bikes, say what?! Talk about making an entrance!
Lady Gaga opens the show!
And the big event is here, folks!! Lady Gaga is raising the curtain with her track ‘Applause,’ dressed all in white with what looks to be a box on her head… Stripping off the white nun-like garb, Mother Monster reveals a sleek black sequinned body suit. But wait, now there’s a blonde wig and a blue suit, followed by a yellow wig, then a bikini! We just can’t keep up!
One Direction present the first award
The British lads take the stage to present the first award for Best Pop Video! And the winner is… Selena Gomez!!
“This is my first actual Moonman, thank you so much! This has been such a great year for me and I wouldn’t have done it without you guys,” she told her fans in her acceptance speech.
Miley Cyrus and Robin Thicke perform!
Miley sure knows how to make an entrance, taking the stage dressed in a leotard surrounded by giant stuffed teddy bears to perform ‘We Can’t Stop’! If you thought her video was crazy – she’s just taken it to a whole new level! Oh yeah, and the twerk-o-meter is off the chain (as we expected!)
Miles rips off her leotard to reveal a set of shiny underwear before Robin Thicke takes the stage for ‘Blurred Lines,’ which they perform together – bumping and grinding to the extreme. But wait, is that 2 Chainz?! The rapper steps out joining the pair to perform a rap interlude, complete with football uniform-clad backup dancers. What. A. Show.
Macklemore & Ryan Lewis win Best Hip-Hop Video!
Aussie rapper Iggy Azalea and ‘90s icon (and Brooklyn native) Lil Kim take the stage to present the award for Best Hip-Hop Video, which goes to… Macklemore & Ryan Lewis for ‘Can’t Hold Us’!
Jared Leto presents Kanye West’s performance
The lights in the Barclays Center go down and Kanye stands front and centre in the darkness to perform, opening with an epic a cappella, auto-tuned soliloquy of ‘Blood on the Leaves’ – a definitely more down-beat and understated performance for the rapper.
Pharrell Williams, Nile Rodgers and Daft Punk present award for Best Female Video to Taylor Swift!
The trio of awesomeness literally sparkle on stage as they present the exciting Best Female Video award. And the Moonman goes to, Taylor Swift for ‘I Knew You Were Trouble’!
“I wanna thank the fans because I tweeted about this a lot, I really really wanted this!” gushed Taylor during her speech.
“I also want to thank the person who inspired this song because he knows exactly who he is and now I’ve got one of these!” added Taylor before the camera panned to Harry Styles in the crowd. Nice one T-Swizzle!
Ed Sheeran presents Best Video with a Social Message
Ed presents the award to Macklemore & Ryan Lewis for ‘Same Love’ – which means the duo have now snapped up two Moonmen!
“Gay rights are human rights, there is no separation,” said Mack in his speech.
Justin Timberlake performs with special guests *NSYNC!
Entering from backstage, JT belts out his hit track ‘Take Back the Night’ whilst being followed like the Pied Piper by his backup dancers. Suddenly appearing on stage, lit by a flood of red lights, the star performs a greatest hits medley of tracks including ‘SexyBack,’ ‘Like I Love You,’ ‘My Love’ ‘Cry Me a River,’ ‘Senorita’ and ‘Rock Your Body.’
Hold up, THAT’S *NYSNC RIGHT THERE!!!!! *NSYNC ARE BAAAACK!!!! The fivesome have reunited and they haven’t lost any of their magic touch, donning slick suits to perform ‘Girlfriend’ and ‘Bye Bye Bye’! All of our high school dreams have just come back to life (please excuse us while we fan ourselves with our life-sized JT posters.)
But *NSYNC’s visit is a fleeting one, with Timberlake moving into ‘Suit & Tie’ followed by ‘Mirrors.’ Can we just say, even this early on in the show, that that was the performance of the night?! Looks like we just did.
Jimmy Fallon presents Justin Timberlake with the Michael Jackson Video Vanguard Award
Comedian Jimmy Fallon presents his longtime pal with the prestigious Video Vanguard Award immediately after the star wraps up his performance.
“I don’t deserve this award but I’m not going to give it back, I’m taking this home,” said JT before dedicating the award to ‘every video director he’d ever worked with.’
“Half the Moonmen I’ve ever won I won with those four guys right there,” he said of his *NYSNC buddies. “I’m going to share this award with them.” What a way to wrap up an epic performance and killer reunion!
Vampire Weekend present the Best Song of the Summer award to One Direction!
One Direction scoop the Best Song of the Summer award for their latest catchy jam ‘Best Song Ever’ – taking the opportunity to thank their fans for voting.
“We can’t believe the things our fans have done for us over the past three years … this one’s for you guys, thanks so much everybody,” gushed Liam Payne.
Macklemore & Ryan Lewis perform the VMA-winning ballad ‘Same Love’
The duo are on a roll tonight, already winning two Moonmen and now performing a very moving rendition of their ballad ‘Same Love,’ in a small and more intimate stage-setting. Mack and Ryan are accompanied by their incredible female vocalist, a brass band and a surprise special guest – Jennifer Hudson! Goosebumps.
Emeli Sande and Adam Lambert present the Artist to Watch award
And the KAWS Moonman goes to… Austin Mahone! Fresh off his pre-show red carpet performance, the American teen takes out the coveted Artist to Watch award.
“Oh my god … this is obviously one of the coolest things ever!” he exclaimed in his speech before thanking his mother and “last but not least, my Mahomies.”

The R&B star performs his track ‘Hold On We’re Going Home’ whilst standing amongst the crowd before jumping up to the stage to belt out his hit ‘Started from the Bottom,’ complete with pyrotechnics and fire-ball explosions. HOT!

Selena Gomez welcomes Bruno Mars to the VMA stage
He’s just snapped up his first Moonman and now Bruno Mars is performing his new track ‘Gorilla’ live for the first time on the VMA stage! Dressed in a cheetah-print shirt, waistcoat and trademark fedora, Mars’ powerful performance is topped off by green laser lights, smoke machines and great balls of fire.
Joseph Gordon-Levitt presents Video of the Year to Justin Timberlake!
Video of the Year, easily the most coveted Moonman of the VMAs, this year goes to Justin Timberlake for ‘Mirrors’!
“This is a very special video for me because it’s a tribute to my grandparents," began the star. "But let’s not get soft, we all have grandparents! My grandfather actually passed away in December so I hope my grandmother is watching right now, this is for you granny."
Katy Perry closes the VMAs with ‘Roar’!
The one-and-only Katy Perry takes the stage to perform her brand new single for the first time ever. The stage is set like a boxing ring and KP is dressed in full fighting garb (you know, tiger-print cropped top, silk boxers), ready to throw a punch. And does she ever.
