Miley Cyrus's Tattoo Artist Opens Up About Being Trolled Online
Overcoming adversity in a mostly male-dominated industry is something tattoo artist Lauren Winzer is extremely well-versed in.
Despite having had a knack for drawing from a young age, Lauren always felt that becoming a tattoo artist was never a realistic option for her as there weren't many women in the field. Over the years, she's also copped quite a bit of backlash online for forgoing the tradtional route on her path to success and favouring innovative designs.
"When I began, I felt separated from the tattoo community because people didn't understand what I was doing...A couple of tattoo artists in my community were saying some gnarly things."
Luckily, other artists were happy to back Lauren and loved the fact she was doing something new. The support has lead Lauren to open her own studio, Hunter & Fox in Sydney, and attract some very high profile clients, including Miley Cyrus.
Lauren is also a part of all-female artist collective Curvy, along with fellow artist Nanami Cowdroy whose bold and intricate greyscale illustrations often have her confused for a male artist.
It's this kind of misconception and adversity that has empowered Nanami and Lauren to embrace their individuality and support other female creatives.
