Let Lily-Rose Depp Perfectly Explain To You What It Means To Be 'Queer'
Lily-Rose Depp wants to set the record straight on what she meant when she 'came out' last year.
In an interview with Nylon mag to chat about her first film role in Yoga Hosers, the 16-year-old daughter of Johnny Depp was asked about her sexuality and what it means to be queer.
Issues surrounding gender, sexuality and everything in between are important social topics right now which require careful and thoughtful conversations in public, but no one seems more informed than the youth of today.
To that point, Lily-Rose had an incredibly mature, succinct and percipient answer to the journalist's question:
"So many kids these days are not labeling their sexuality and I think that’s so cool. Just like food, you could think peanut butter is your favorite food for, 5,000 years and then be like, "I actually like burgers better," you know? I was just trying to say that kids and people in general don’t have to label themselves and say, "I’m straight" or "I’m gay" or "I’m whatever." If you like something one day then you do, and if you like something else the other day, it’s whatever. You don’t have to label yourself, because it’s not set in stone. It’s so fluid and there’s so much pressure on kids to label themselves and say, "This is what I am, this is what I like.'"
She also went on to say that the media "misconstrued" what she meant when she 'came out'.
"I guess it came off the wrong way, because then everyone labeled me as gay," she said. "That’s not what I was trying to say. Not that there’s anything wrong with that, of course! But I did that literally just to say you don’t have to label yourself, and then everyone was like, 'Lily Rose Depp comes out as gay!'"
Regardless of how she identifies sexually, few people have been able to explain the feelings of a generation with as much candour as Lily-Rose. At only 16, we see big things in the future for this bright young lady.
