Supergroup announced for Grammy Awards show!
As if an Elton John and Ed Sheeran collab wasn’t enough, those crazy Grammy folk have gone and added yet another brilliant mash-up to this weekend’s roster of talent – a supergroup comprised of Blink-182 drummer Travis Barker, Grammy Host LL Cool J, Public Enemy leader Chuck D, Rage Against the Machine guitarist Tom Morello and DJ Z-Trip!
Recording Academy President/CEO Neil Portnow spoke to MTV News, revealing that the idea for the collab came out of the Academy’s long-standing relationship with LL Cool J.
“LL is part of our family now,” said Portnow of the Grammy host.
“He's not a hired gun and last year after we did the nominations show we said, 'let's do [something] this year' and he was up for it.”
According to Portnow, the idea was to pair LL with a group of other artists to celebrate his iconic standing in hip-hop.
“He represents so much history with his work in hip-hop ... to this day he's in it, he's respected for it and we thought, ‘gee, it's right under our noses, let's do something with LL and have a lot of fun with that.’”
And while Portnow didn’t go into specifics about the performance he did dish that it’s “not so much a tribute to his [LL's] music, so much as a celebration of the kind of music he's been known for and others that have followed.”
Miguel and Wiz Khalifa will also be teaming up for this weekend’s awards show, along with previously announced acts Kelly Clarkson, Frank Ocean, Maroon 5 and Alicia Keys, Justin Timberlake, Taylor Swift and Rihanna.
