'The Lord Of The Rings' Volcano In New Zealand May Be Erupting Soon
For all you Lord of the Rings fans who may be making a sacred pilgrimage to New Zealand to see the IRL places that Frodo Baggins and friends visited in Middle Earth, then you may have to steer clear of one major highlight that’s probably on your bucket list.
Mount Ruapehu, the actual mountain in New Zealand that set the backdrop for Mount Doom in Mordor—yes, Mount Doom the only place were the ring can be destroyed—may be erupting soon according to the Department of Conservation in New Zealand.
The last time that Mount Ruapehu erupted was in 2007, however the recent increase in the output of volcanic gas indicates that it’s showing signs of life again. Consequently, the volcanic alert level has been lifted from ‘moderate’ to ‘heightened unrest.’
As a result, tourists and trekkers have been warned to steer clear of the volcano and its surrounding areas.
