An interview with MaRLo
We caught up with Dutch born DJ and producer MaRLo ahead of his highly-anticipated show at Marquee Nightclub this Saturday to chat about his new mix-comp Visions, his favourite festivals and plans for 2015.
MTV: You’re about to kick off your tour with Stereosonic – how’s the preparation going for that?
MaRLo: At the moment I’m preparing a whole bunch of new mashups and edits and stuff like that to make the show exciting. I’ve also got some new visual elements. I’m really excited to play.
MTV: Can fans expect another live show this year?
MaRLo: No, this year I’m not doing a live show. I did do a live show a couple of years ago where I brought the whole studio equipment up on stage with me and I did it that way. I found that it was quite hard to interact with the crowd and play the keyboard at the same time and I think that element is pretty important in your performance now days.
MTV: Will you be playing any new material?
MaRLo: Yeah absolutely, I’ve just done a big a compilation where I put three exclusive tracks of my own on there, which are only available through the compilation. The lead single is called ‘Barracuda’, so I will be playing that and a bunch of my other tunes. A bunch of new edits, mash-ups and new tunes as well.
MTV: Are there any other artists on the line-up you’re keen to see?
MaRLo: Yeah, my good friends are Andrew Rayel and Ørjan Nilsen so I’m going to catch up with them and maybe hop in the studio, who knows. It’s good to see guys like Dash Berlin and W&W as well.
MTV: What are your top three festival essentials?
MaRLo: Well in Australia, you should probably bring some sunscreen. The sun gets really hot and I got really sun burnt one year. And some sunglasses I suppose. And keep hydrated with some water and be responsible.

MTV: Can you tell us about the best gig you’ve ever played?
MaRLo: I don’t know if I can pinpoint the one best gig because there’s such a big difference to playing at big festivals with a huge crowd or playing at a small intimate club gig and they’re both very special in their own way. The top three would have to be Mexico, Buenos Aires and at home.
MTV: What about your best festival experience?
MaRLo: Stereosonic, Tomorrowland and a State of Trance.
MTV: You’ve released on Armin Van Buuren’s label, are you guys friends?
MaRLo: Yeah I would consider us friends. I’ve known him for quite a few years and he’s been incredibly supportive. You see guys like that on the touring circuit all the time. I just saw him in Europe and in America. You bump into each other all over the place at these festivals. So yeah, you do become friends over time.

MTV: Who’s the most famous person in your phonebook?
MaRLo: I guess probably Armin. Or maybe Tiesto.
MTV: Who would you love to collaborate with?
MaRLo: I’d have to say Armin again; I mean he’s ticking all of the boxes here. I’ve known him for a long time and he is obviously very good. It would be amazing.

MTV: What’s the best after party you’ve ever been to?
MaRLo: The Stereosonic after parties are pretty awesome because there are just so many acts there. It’s kind of like a school camp; it’s very unique to spend that much time with the whole festival it’s like a touring circus. Usually you fly into a festival and then you fly to your next gig the next day and quite often on a flat deadline. You only see other artists for maybe an hour backstage and then you go your separate ways. At Stereosonic you’re with each other for a full 10 days and during the week we all stay at the same hotel and there are activities and dinners we all go to. So you really form a bond with all the artists and by the time the tour actually finishes it’s actually quite sad to see all your friends go.
MTV: What’s left on your bucket list?
MaRLo: I’d really like to play at EDC in America and also Ultra in Miami and I’d love to eventually play main stage at Tomorrowland. That would be insane.
MTV: Any new releases on the horizon?
MaRLo: Right now I’ve got my Visions compilation out as well as a few exciting projects coming up. I’ve got a remix for Dash Berlin, a remix for Gareth Emery and I’ve got an original with Christina Neville and another big instrumental, sort of more stadium style track.
Catch MaRLo at Marquee nightclub this Saturday and on the Stereosonic tour later this month.
