How I Survived Fashion Week As The Less Famous Lisa Hamilton
My name is Lisa Hamilton and here is the tale of how I survived Mercedes-Benz Fashion Week as the less famous Lisa Hamilton.
As the resident journalist for MTV Style this was our maiden journey into fashion week, I had a new wardrobe and a sass in my step, excited to cover all of the sartorial happenings around Carriageworks.
In the weeks leading up to MBFWA I was excited to receive a flurry of invites to shows in my inbox. Perhaps it was naivety or an inflated sense of entitlement that lead me to believe that even though I’d never been to fashion week before and I had no sort of profile in the fashion industry, all of these invites were for me.
I was chuffed…maybe my 370 (and growing) followers on Instagram was starting to get me noticed, I felt like Julia Roberts in Pretty Woman finally being allowed to shop, I could finally tell my mother I’d hit the big time.
The night before opening day delusions of grandeur had me fantasising about sitting FROW, rubbing shoulders with the fashion pack and sipping cocktails with the elite bloggers on the scene. If Rihanna is BadGal RiRi then consider me BadGal LiLi. I was ready for this situation; I’ve been ready for this situation since I first pulled on knee-high socks, a pleated skirt and a navy beret at 7-years-old to create my first stylised ~lewk~.
Day 1; I curled my hair, spent 30 minutes trying to perfect some cat winged eyeliner, before arriving bright-eyed and bushy tailed to my first show. I printed my ticket and was shocked to learn I had been assigned a seat sitting plush in the front row. Pinch me, please pinch me.
As I cruised down the fresh catwalk looking for my seat…there she was. Seat E-1-7. My seat. Perfectly curled blonde hair, on point cat winged eyeliner and wearing the designer in question of course. It was Lisa Hamilton. It was me, but the more fashionable and famous version. Not wanting to cause a scene and end up on the front pages of newspapers (I’m flattering myself) I slinked back to the standing section.
Throughout MBFWA this scene repeated itself eight times. Eight times. (I’m repeating myself as a form of catharsis.) Eight times I saw her sitting there and every time my ego took another hit as I relinquished myself to the back of the seats like the resident hunchback (in fabulous shoes) of fashion week.
I’d like to take this moment to say that I don’t blame Lisa Hamilton. I don’t blame her for being the much more cooler, fashionable and successful version of me a.k.a the blogger behind See Want Shop. I don’t blame her for being more organised and getting to the shows earlier than me and nabbing ‘our’ seat first (I was schmoozing and taking advantage of free champagne so sue me).
I don’t blame our parents for naming us both Lisa Hamilton and you then forming the skillset to mould the moniker into a brand much more successful than mine.
In fact, I’d like to offer Lisa Hamilton a truce. Can we not find an amicable way to traverse through the fashion industry together? Synergising our brands (read: I’ll leach off her already stellar position in the field) so we can create one grandiose Lisa Hamilton that will be revered by all? At this point I’m more than acutely aware that I’m not even a blimp on the other Lisa Hamilton’s (say Lisa Hamilton one more time) radar but in a totally non-aggressive tone I’d like her to know that I’m here to stay and I’m not going anywhere.
Is there room for both of us in this industry? I think so. If PR agencies can appreciate that there are two of us (“Lisa, here are some great shots of you from our designer gifting suite!” – cut to me crying in a corner with a chocolate brownie) then I think we can navigate these waters with clear eyes, full hearts and great clothes.
My week as the less famous Lisa Hamilton has turned me into a DGAF fashion warrior, may my lessons learnt this week act as a reminder to all the self-branded basics out there…don’t stand in the back row, stand up and be the best Lisa Hamilton you can be….or whatever your name is.
