Michael Buble Meets Madison Square Garden
To quote the wise words of one Kath Day-Knight, “Michael, Michael, Michael; could you BE any more divine?” As so brilliantly skewered on ‘Kath and Kim’, affable swing singer, Michael Buble , is the middle-of-the-road eye candy of choice for many a bored housewife and eligible bachelorette.
For said housewives, ‘Michael Buble Meets Madison Square Garden’ should satiate all urges, featuring as it does a live CD recorded in Madison Square Gardens and an accompanying behind-the-scenes DVD.
But to dismiss Buble as just another MOR oldies fave, to file in between Westlife and Andre Reiu , is somewhat unfair. While his choice of cover songs is rarely inspired - let’s face it, no one really needs to hear yet another swing cover of ‘Me and Mrs. Jones’ or ‘Feeling Good’ – his own originals are of a uniformly high standard. Several of them are performed here, including the genuinely touching ballad, ‘Home’ , written while Buble was on the road and yearning to return to his (now-ex) girlfriend, Emily Blunt. Also included is the gorgeous ‘Everything’ , another Buble-penned track that seems destined to soundtrack weddings for many a year to come, as well as ‘Lost’, a soaring ballad the singer wrote with Canadian singer-songwriter, Jann Arden (remember her sole hit, 1994’s ‘Insensitive’?)
The accompanying DVD, a 70-minute documentary that trails Buble in the days leading up the Madison Square Gardens show, features live performances, backstage footage and interviews with the singer and his band. As rock docos go, it’s not exactly up there with the greats (Gimme Shelter, Metallica: Some Kind Of Monster, Spiceworld: The Movie ), but it’s an enjoyable enough diversion.
