From Having 'To Be Gay' To Shading Liam Hemsworth: Everything You Should Know About Miley Cyrus's Controversial Insta Live With Cody Simpson
She said, “I thought I had to be gay cause I just thought, like, all guys were evil, but it’s not true. There are good people out there that just happen to have dicks, I’ve only ever met one … and he’s on this Live”. She went on to say that, “There are good men out there, guys, don’t give up … you don’t have to be gay”.
Miley’s comments essentially imply that homosexuality is a choice – something that can be switched on and off at will, and that lesbians are simply in need of a nice guy to turn ‘em straight. A guy like Cody Simpson.
This may not have been the message that Miley meant to convey, but it’s certainly how it came across. Her language is offensive, tiresome and bafflingly obtuse considering that Miley has aligned herself with the LGBTQ+ community for years now.
In an era when language is more important than ever, a slip up like this is enough to end careers – although for someone of Miley’s stardom, it won’t. She might not be cancelled just yet, but she’s definitely lost some fans.
Damn. In 30 seconds @MileyCyrus managed to burn up all goodwill she'd ever built with queer and trans people.
Not all "guys" have dicks, Miley. Thought you knew better.
You "had to be gay" because men are bad? Do you not realize what an anti-lesbian trope that is?

Miley, this is so not it. Women don’t “have to be gay” because they “can’t find a good person with a d*ck”.
Don’t use the queer community as a stop-gap because you couldn’t find a boyfriend.
People aren’t queer because they “gave up” on men.
This is so insulting. pic.twitter.com/lAzcEjHRcB

Miley’s since apologised for her remarks, saying, “I was talking about sucky guys, but let me be clear, YOU don’t CHOOSE your sexuality”.

So how, in 2019, are people still making these incredibly rudimentary mistakes? Does Miley - a superstar with 100M followers on Instagram – really still not understand the power of her platform? Her words matter. And her brand of candour has ramifications.
Okay, putting the important stuff to the side for a sec: even the sh*ttest of sleuths would note the obvious shade Miley was throwing at her ex, Liam Hemsworth, in the Live. The musician said she thought “all men were evil” before she met Cody – we guess Liam falls into that category..? It’ll be interesting to see if he has anything to say about the implication.
All in all, a mega-fail from Cyrus. We hope next time she’ll consider her words more carefully.
