Miley Cyrus Has Torn Our Hearts Out With Her New Breakup Anthem
'Slide Away' has literally JUST been released and boy does it kick you in the guts.
The first verse begins with "Once upon a time, it was paradise / One upon a time, I was paralysed" but the tides change in the next verse to "Once upon a time, it was made for us / Woke up one day, it had turned to dust / Baby, we were found, but now we’re lost / So it’s time to let it go."
With reports swirling that substance abuse and partying were a cause for the breakup, this song almost nails it in the coffin with the lines, "I want my house in the hills / Don’t want the whiskey and pills".
Our favourite couple split their time between the bright lights of LA and their Byron Bay abode, and by the sounds of things, they've divided up their properties. Miley's chorus pushes Liam "back to the ocean" while she goes "back to the city lights", making us speculate as to whether Liam will be returning to Australian shores or to their Malibu residence.
The song also talks of how they've both changed since they first met in 2009 filming The Last Song. The perfect rom-com spilled over into real life with the two getting engaged in 2012 and calling it off a year late, before rekindling their romance in 2016. "Move on, we’re not seventeen / I’m not who I used to be / You say that everything’s changed / You’re right, we’re grown now" she sings as we reminisce.
Despite the fact that tears are streaming down our faces, we can't help but bop along because at the crux of it, it's a good tune.
Out of devestation comes beauty, out of pain comes art, and this song is just that.
Excuse us while we grab a box of tissues and a disco ball.
