'We're Working On Ourselves': Miley Cyrus On Her Split With Cody Simpson
Their split was first announced late last week with a source telling TMZ it had happened “within the last few weeks.” Fans were shocked considering only a couple of weeks ago, Cody, 23, had posted a photo of Miley, 27, on his Instagram Stories, writing “in love with my best friend.”
Now, Miley is explaining the situation herself. In an Instagram Live over the weekend, she said: “A year ago, almost to this exact date, the media tried to tell my story for me, and control my narrative, and I’m just not accepting that.”
Course, it was about this time last year that Miley was spotted getting cosy with Brody Jenner’s ex Kaitlynn Carter while holidaying in Europe – consequently revealing she’d split with her husband at the time, Liam Hemsworth.
Miley continued: “And so today, it came out that me and my boyfriend have broken up. It was confirmed by a 'reliable source' even though no one is reliable in a relationship except the individuals who are participating in it.” Turns out though, the ‘reliable source’ was right, with Miley going on to seemingly confirm the news with her comment: “right now, two halves can’t make a whole.”
“We’re individually just working on ourselves to become the people that we wanna be, like everybody else at this age,” she said. “We are just deciding who we wanna be with our lives, what we wanna do with our lives, and so, don't make it some drama story if next week we're out hanging out, getting pizza.” She finished: “We've been friends for 10 years and we're going to continue to be friends, so just don't make it something that it is not.”
The same day their breakup was revealed, Miley dropped her new single “Midnight Sky”. Cody shared the song on his Instagram Stories, writing: “So proud of you. Congratulations to the most special of all.”
.@CodySimpson and @MileyCyrus have unfortunately separated as partners at this time to focus on their lives and what they want to do with them but he’s still sending her support and they will continue to be good friends! ❤️ #MidnightSky pic.twitter.com/FulVDogv4S

A source told E! News the pair were headed in different directions. “Cody felt like he was in a different place and wanted to be single. Miley started to get busy working on new music and their relationship fizzled out,” they said.
“Nothing bad happened and they still respect each other. Miley has expressed she wants to be single for awhile. Cody has taken more interest in partying and being around a lot of friends and Miley's not into that right now.” Considering Miley's frequently raved about the new sober lifestyle she's adopted since November last year, we can see that.
