Tom Cruise Is Proof That Age Is Just A Number
Tom Cruise really is one of the Hollywood greats.
His illustrious career has garnered him a cult following, timeless movies added to the iMDB resume, Oscar noms and apparently a work ethic that just will not quit. Most people might not know this, but the guy from Syracuse, New York first cut his teeth on the set of Endless Love almost 40 years ago in 1981. Which puts him at the ripe age of 56...and he's still making action movies, with the sixth Mission: Impossible film (Fallout) slated for release on August 2nd this year. Now that, that is impressive.
But how does he do it? He's jumping out of planes, kicking *ss in fight scenes and scaling buildings better than actors half his age. Let's take a look back at all of the major milestones in Mr Cruise's career that has lead him to being one of the best actors of this generation.
Who can forget Cruise’s iconic dance scene in teen comedy film Risky Business in 1983.
The crisp shirt/no pants look has definitely gone down as one of his most memorable career moments. And we can probably all confirm we've done this at home on Friday night, haven't we?!
In 1986, Cruise slayed the role of pilot, Pete ‘Maverick’ Mitchell, making it a franchise that was worth re-igniting almost 20 years later. It also firmly cemented him as a Hollywood heartthrob and pretty much every guy wanted to be him.
Casino Scene in Rain Man
How can we forget the scene where Tom Cruise and Dustin Hoffman used their counting cards trick to nearly bankrupt a casino. Watching these two actors was ELECTRIC throughout the whole film and it's safe to say people starting regarding Cruise as more than just a pretty face after its release.
First Oscar Nomination
Cruise earned his first Oscar nomination in 1989 after his stunning performance in the film Born on the Fourth of July. He didn’t win but he did snatch up a Golden Globe Award.
Show Me The Money
Playing a sports agent in the legendary film Jerry Maguire, his iconic "show me the money” line literally stole the show. Couldn't you just watch that scene on repeat forever? For his efforts he landed another Golden Globe for Best Actor.
His performance in Magnolia nabbed him a his third Oscar nomination of his career and we reckon it all boils down to *that* motivational speech scene. Playing Frank T.J. Mackey his character was a complex, disturbed, sexual, man that really left a mark on the audience.
The Birth Of Les Grossman
In 2008 we were introduced to Les Grossman...but you had to squint real hard to see beneath the prosthetics was Tom Cruise.
He played the hilarious character in Tropic Thunder which was so widely loved he started popping up on stage with Jennifer Lopez and in One Direction's video clip for 'Best Night Ever'.
Cruise has got pipes
If you haven’t seen Rock of Ages, then you haven't yet lived.
Cruise’s performance in this musical comedy film was definitely outside his comfort zone, but he proved he's a jack of all trades after her garnered a collective Grammy nomination for best compilation soundtrack. That’s right, Cruise is featured on 8 different songs on the album. Get downloading now.
Above all Cruise's most impressive career achievement has been the Mission: Impossible franchise. In 1996, he signed on to play Ethan Hunt in the action spy movie and has since built it into one of the most successful studio franchises ever. Acting as both the star of the films and a producer, Cruise has driven MI towards the release of the sixth film in the legendary series. And at 56-years-old he shows no signs of slowing down, after promising fans he has a lot more in store for Ethan Hunt. We for one, cannot wait.
