It’s A 'Bran Nue Dae'!
It’s 1969 in the idyllic old pearling port of Broome, WA. Life’s pretty good for Willie (Rocky Mackenzie), who spends his days fishing, hanging out with his mates and lusting after the beautiful Rosie (Jessica Mauboy), who dreams of a singing career.
But Willie’s mum has a different plan for her teenage son; she wants him to study and become a Catholic priest. So when he’s sent off to boarding school in Perth run by stern Father Benedictus (Geoffrey Rush), it doesn’t take long for Willie to fly the coop in search of adventure and a way back home.
The exuberant adaptation of the 1990 stage musical by director Rachel Perkins ‘Bran Nue Dae’ is part road trip, part coming of age, part musical and a celebration of homecoming - topped off with a string of energetic musical numbers that are guaranteed to take up residence in your brain for weeks to come!.
With Aussie songstresses Jessica Mauboy and Missy Higgins making their cinematic debut alongside Aussie film royalty like Ernie Dingo, Deborah Mailman, Magda Szubanski and the
incomparable Geoffrey Rush, ‘Bran Nue Dae’ is a hilarious and compelling look back at vibrant 1970’s Australia, and is already tipped to be the next homegrown cinema classic.
‘Bran Nue Dae’ is in cinemas from January 14, 2010.
