Best moments from the ‘2014 Golden Globe Awards’
The ‘71st Annual Golden Globe Awards’ kicked off with a bang thanks to the comic genius and incredible chemistry of Amy Poehler and Tina Fey, but it wasn’t just the duo’s opening monologue that made this an awards show to remember.
So without further ado, here are some of our highlights from this year’s Globes…
Amy Poehler and Tina Fey summarise ‘Gravity’ in one swift sentence
The most hilarious twosome in Hollywood, Amy Poehler and Tina Fey brought the LOLs in their opening monologue as hosts of this year’s ‘Golden Globes,’ singling out several famous faces in the crowd and giving them a darn good seeing to. But the burn that caused the most commotion from the audience was the one aimed at George Clooney and his action thriller ‘Gravity.’
The ‘Saturday Night Live’ stars described the flick as “The story of how George Clooney would rather float off and die than spend one more minute with a woman his own age.” Cue camera pan to Sandra Bullock and a huge roar of laughter from the crowd. Spot on ladies.
Jennifer Lawrence proves dreams really do come true
Our favourite Hollywood leading lady, Jennifer Lawrence, took home the first award of the night – Best Supporting Actress for ‘American Hustle.’ The actress looked nervous taking the stage to accept her award, and admitted she’d been a fan of her director David O. Russell for years, and had even googled him after watching one of his films – never thinking she’d eventually end up working with him.
“Years ago, I watched a movie called ‘I Heart Huckabees’ and I was so in awe and floored by this completely unchartered humour,” shared JLaw during her acceptance speech.
“So I googled who made it and I saw that it was the same director as ‘Three Kings’ and ‘Flirting With Disaster’ and ‘Spanking the Monkey’ and I just thought that this is the most brilliant man in every single way and so by some weird twist of fate, this is the same man that made my career. It's so weird!”
Matt Damon forgets his spectacles
Taking the stage and acknowledging Amy and Tina coining him the ‘Garbage Man’ of the Golden Globes, Matt Damon quickly realised he couldn’t read the autocue and had become “the garbage man who forgot his glasses.” Thankfully, he was introducing Tom Hanks’ latest flick ‘Captain Phillips’ – a film and actor for which he had nothing but praise – and took us into the movie’s preview completely off the cuff.
Jonah Hill and Margot Robbie’s teleprompter flop
Jonah Hill and Margot Robbie took the stage to plug their Best Motion Picture – Musical or Comedy-nominated film ‘The Wolf of Wall Street,’ but the audience were met with blank stares as the pair realised the teleprompter was displaying the wrong text. Uh oh. Quick-thinking Jonah filled the crowd in on the faux pas and the pair were quickly handed a sheet of paper containing their script. Probably not what Margot had in mind for her first Golden Globes presenting appearance?
Amy Poehler dresses as Tina Fey’s “adult son from a previous relationship” – AKA Mr Golden Globe
Kevin Bacon and Kyra Sedgwick were proud as punch at this year’s awards, as their daughter Sosie Bacon had the honour of being 2014’s Miss Golden Globe. But their jubilation was quickly overshadowed when Tina Fey stole their spotlight to introduce Mr Golden Globes – ‘Randy,’ her “adult son from a previous relationship.” Or Amy Poehler in a wig playing a bratty teenager in a suit, who clearly would rather still be at home playing X Box in his undies.
“Don’t talk to me like that,” quipped Fey, after several grunted responses from her ‘child.’ “Do you want to go and live with your father?”
“I can’t, I don’t know who he is!” retorted ‘Randy’ who then went to seek out his father in the audience after his ‘mum’ revealed he was indeed somewhere in the room.
Amy Poehler slaps a big wet one on U2’s Bono
Amy Poehler went from Golden Globes host to Golden Globes winner, taking home the trophy for Best Actress in a TV Series – Musical or Comedy – her first Globes success. And who better to help her celebrate her new found glory than U2’s Bono! As the nominees were being read out, the camera panned to the ‘Parks and Recreation’ star receiving a massage from the Irish rocker. Upon hearing she’d won, the actress seized her big moment and went in for the pash with Bono – who happily played along.
“Thank you everyone, this was the beautiful mess we hoped it would be,” exclaimed Tina Fey as the credits rolled on the ‘2014 Golden Globes.’
“And I got to make out with Bono!” added Poehler.
