EXCLUSIVE! Martin Garrix talks EDM: 'We're all a big family'
Martin Garrix is the latest producer to weigh in on the current state of dance music, revealing that he sees EDM as “one big family.” Catching up with the 18-year-old ‘Animals’ star backstage at Electric Daisy Carnival in New York over the weekend, we asked him to lay out his opinion and more…
MTV: Hey Martin! What's been happening at EDC so far?
Martin Garrix: I'm having a great time, I played my new collabs such as Gold Skies with Sander van Doorn and DVBBS as well as some new stuff of my own, so that was definitely a highlight. We also had fireworks going off and confetti falling too, which really gave me goose bumps.
MTV: Have you had the chance to hang out with any of the other artists today?
Martin Garrix: I have been hanging out with everyone, everyone here is my friend. But I loved hanging out with Afrojack and Hardwell, as also Jay Hardway, he's a really good friend of mine so I really love seeing him.
MTV: Have you had any big nights out while you’ve been in New York?
Martin Garrix: I was at Pacha last night which is always fun. I played there once before and loved it.
MTV: What do you think about Australian dance music?
Martin Garrix: I love it! It's so groovy. And bouncy! [bounces up and down]. There is just such a good vibe in the streets, and I love that it's such a clean and beautiful city.
MTV: Do you have any favourite Australian producers?
Martin Garrix: Will Sparks. He is my absolute favourite. And he's my buddy too! I also really love Timmy Trumpet, we hung out a lot when I was in Australia for Future Music Festival and had so much fun, they're really good guys.
MTV: What do you think about the EDM takeover that’s happening right now?
Martin Garrix: It's crazy to see, I love it. In such a short time period it has grown so much. Now you are seeing electronic dance music producers on TV, on talk shows. It's so great to see the festivals growing bigger and bigger, it's like one big family that's all partying with each other. I love being a part of that.
MTV: Any new music coming up you can tell us about?
Martin Garrix: Well, there is a headline tour to come, new music with Ed Sheeran, as well as more new music with Tiesto and Afrojack. I played some new stuff during my set yesterday, which I will play again today with a whole new set.
MTV: Do you have any messages for your Australian fans?
Martin Garrix: Tell them to keep an eye out for an announcement about a new headline tour and that I can't wait to see them very soon!
