INTERVIEW: Sick Individuals at Ultra Music Festival
Moments after their monster gig at Ultra Music Festival, we sat down with Dutch progressive house duo Sick Individuals to chat about their recent success, upcoming Australian tour and epic time at Miami Music Week.
MTV: Hey guys, what’s been happening this week so far?
Sick Individuals: It’s been such a crazy week for us; we’ve had nine shows since last Saturday!
MTV: How did your Ultra gig go?
Sick Individuals: It was raining just before our set and they had shut down all the stages except for main stage. Five minutes before we were meant to start, they reopened our stage by switching all the lights on and turning the music up. Everyone ran up to the stage as we started to play our first track and started jumping so hard that the stage started to collapse!
MTV: How does the Ultra crowd compare to your fans in Holland?
Sick Individuals: The crowd at Ultra always raves big time. We didn’t play on the biggest stage, but the crowd was still so energetic. We play all around the world but playing in the US is always so fun. We’re about to come to Australia so we can’t wait to see what the crowd is like there.
MTV: Are you fans of any Australian DJs or producers?
Sick Individuals: We know Nervo, Tommy Trash and Hook N Sling. They’re all so nice. We’ve heard Australia is really on top of dance music so we’re expecting a pretty cool crowd.
MTV: Have you got any new releases coming out soon?
Sick Individuals: We have a new record coming out, it’s called ‘Rock & Rave’ which is going to be released on Ultra Records at the end of April. We have a lot of records we’re working on though, three more melodic vocal tracks and a lot of original music. Last year we did 22 remixes [for guys like Avicii and David Guetta] and that was a way for us to get out there. Now we’ve done two originals that have been really successful for us and we’ve had the opportunity to release them on big labels with huge exposure.
MTV: Any new collaborations?
Sick Individuals: Sometimes collaborating is nice but it’s good to be working on our own production at the moment. Our last collaboration hit number one and we made it after three days in the studio. So I guess that was pretty cool!
MTV: Have you had any studio sessions since you’ve been in Miami?
Sick Individuals: No studio time, just a lot of parties...
MTV: What do you think about the whole ‘EDM’ culture in the US?
Sick Individuals: It’s funny that everyone is calling it EDM because, for us, it’s just house music. But if you say house music here people think it’s something old. We’ve even started to call it EDM ourselves *laughs*. The whole culture here is so crazy though, and for them it’s so new. I think the energy is cool. And what’s really awesome about America is that they mix and mash everything – they go from a trap record to something from Armin Van Buuren and everyone still loves it. That’s not something you see in Europe. It’s going out of boundaries a bit here and I think that’s good for their culture. Another cool thing about the people here is their expression; they have the coolest raver clothes!
